Fatz is a chain of casual dining restaurants, mainly in the Southeastern part of the US. Founded by Bill Burton and Jimmy Rogers, the original location was a converted peach storage shed in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Today, the company has 35 locations in 5 states.

The company usually places their restaurants in small towns, avoiding the competition found in large cities. Food is the typical American cuisine, with hamburgers, chicken, ribs, seafood, and pasta. A few locations also offer a salad bar. The company uses trans-fat free oils and specializes in baked, not fried, chicken. Fatz also offers a special menu for other dietary needs.

Originally founded as Fatz Cafe, the company has since rebranded itself in 2017 as Fatz Southern Kitchen.

There was a rumor that the company was going out of business in early January 2019, but these were rumors and nothing more.

Food from Fatz can be delivered via Bite Squad for many locations.

Due to the coronavirus crisis and quarantine, many Fatz locations will not be reopening in 2020.

Fatz is a subsidiary of Cafe Enterprises, Inc., and has headquarters in Taylors, South Carolina.

Half.com was founded in 1999 by Josh Kopelman. The original idea behind the company was to sell used books and textbooks for “half price” or less. The company has no inventory or stores, but instead, has sellers offer their own personal items for sale. The original site sold books, textbooks, and music on CD’s.

The company was purchased by eBay in 2000 for $350 million. Today, it works as a subsidiary of eBay, however, the company does not use an auction type setting as its parent company does. Buyers can see the current new, used, and previously sold prices, however, so they know if the price is a good deal or not. Half.Com offers books, textbooks, music CD’s, movies, and video games.

eBay had considered integrating Half.Com into their platform, however, customers objected. Its main revenue source lies with the used textbook market. The company began accepting PayPal as a means of payment in 2013.

The Christmas Palace was founded in 1992 by Jim Knips, who is the current CEO and owner. The company began as one small seasonal-only store and has since grown into two large year-round locations. Knips has stated he wanted a Christmas store that was “classy, not trashy.”

History

The company has had an increase in sales in the past 3 years. In 2012, the average customer spent $200 per visit. In 2015, customers spent $250 on average. The Christmas Palace has a wide variety of items, priced from $1 ornaments to $40,000 nativity sets.

The company specializes in Christmas trees, offering everything from $5 tabletop models to the grandiose; 60 foot, $150,000 trees for large office buildings.

The company has two locations, in Fort Lauderdale and Hialeah, Florida. The company is rolling out its own ornament designs and Christmas trees in 2016.

The Christmas Palace maintains a corporate office in Hialeah, Florida.

Founded in 1956 by Alfred Marshall, who envisioned a discount brand name clothing store. Marshall, along with several other investors, opened Marshalls and Associates in Beverly, Massachusetts. This store was unique in its day as not only were shoppers able to find deeply discounted brand name clothing, but it was one of the first “find it yourself ” stores, where sales clerks did not offer one on one service.

The company was very successful and by 1966, had grown to become the leading discount retail chain in the US. By purchasing manufacturers over-runs, closeouts, or out of season merchandise, the company can offer discounts of 20 to 60 percent.

Today, Marshalls is a subsidiary of TJX Companies. The company currently has 975 locations throughout the US and 38 locations in Canada, with 6 of these stores being opened in 2015.

Free People Clothing Boutique

Free People Clothing Boutique, frequently called Free People, was founded in the early 1970’s by Dick Hayne and his wife Judy. Hayne wanted a store where people could purchase less than traditional clothing. Today, most people refer to this style of clothing as “bohemian”. The company was quite successful, especially with the younger generation. After opening a second location, Hayne decided to change the name to Urban Outfitters.

Urban Outfitters was very successful. Hayne again decided to make a change and open a subsidiary, which he renamed Free People. The Free People Clothing Boutique opened its “first” location in 2002 in Paramus, New Jersey. Today, Free People has m,ore than 81 locations in the US, along with 2 additional locations in Canada.

The company recently opened its own app where people can not only purchase their clothing directly via the app, but they can upload photos of themselves wearing Free People clothing.
