Valley Skate and Surf was founded in 1976 in North Hills, California. The company is a skateboard and surfing specialty store. When the original owner fell ill, the company was sold to Mona Fleschler, who has since retired, and turned the business over to her daughter, Phyllis.

The store was originally tight on inventory due to limited funds, but its popularity has caused it to grow substantially. Surfboarding, roller skating, and skate boarding are the specialties of the store. Valley Skate and Surf was the first store on the West Coast to offer Rollerblades. The company is best known for offering free lifetime service and labor on every skate or skateboard purchased.

Today, Thomasville Furniture is a full line manufacturer of furniture, designing and making everything from bedroom sets to kitchen cabinets. The company has 30 company owned stores which sell only Thomasville furniture, and an additional 400 stores which feature the brand. Kitchen cabinets are sold under the MasterBrand Cabinet name.

Bankers Life and Casualty, more commonly known as Bankers Life, was founded in Chicago, Illinois, in 1879 as Hotel Men’s Mutual Benefit Association. The company was purchased by John MacArthur in 1935, who renamed the company and worked as CEO until his death in 1978. The company sells life insurance, medical insurance, and accident insurance.

The company was the first to offer Medicare supplement insurance. After Mac Arthur’s death, the company was eventually sold to CNO Financial Group, a holding company for insurance companies. Bankers Life still offers Medicare supplemental insurance, life insurance, as well as annuities and long term care insurance.

As of 2015, the company had more than $19 billion in assets and had processed more than 8.5 million claims. Company headquarters are located in Chicago, Illinois.
