Newk’s Eatery was founded in 2004 by father and son chef’s Don and Chris Newcomb. The pair had previously operated a deli but wanted to expand to include other foods.

The company operates approximately 100 casual dining restaurants in 13 states. In 2014, the company was acquired by Sentinel Capital Partners for an undisclosed sum. Soon after, the company announced that they had plans to expand to more than 400 locations by the end of 2018. It was not disclosed how many of these locations would be franchises.

In 2014, the company had annual revenue of $141 million. Headquarters are now located in Jackson, Mississippi.

History

Today, the company has more than 310 locations in 30 states. Plans for expanding the business have been made, but exactly where new locations would be placed has not been made public. In addition to lumber, the company also carries doors, gardening supplies, and garage doors. Installation centers are available at almost every location.

The company was hit hard by the recession in 2008. From a maximum of 400 locations, owners closed half of their stores, as well as limiting family spending, and laying off employees. The company survived without filing for bankruptcy. In 2015, the company posted annual revenue of $2.5 billion.

In August 2023, 84 Lumber was named for the fourth consecutive year in the Inc. 5000 list of Fastest Growing Companies in the US.

In January 2023, the company announced that it had an aggressive expansion plan, remodeling or adding more than 50 locations and relocating at least 5 current locations.

84 Lumber is still owned and operated by the Hardy family. Headquarters, as well, remain in Eighty Four, Pennsylvania.

Chicken Salad Chick was founded in 2008 by Stacy and Kevin Brown. Stacy’s chicken salad was so popular that friends began asking her to make batches for them. Soon Stacy was selling her chicken salad door to door.

Today, the company has 77 restaurants in 6 states; 13 corporate owned and the remaining one’s franchises. There are 15 different types of chicken salad sold, all are either sold on beds of lettuce or with bread to make sandwiches. Chicken salad is also sold by the pound. The company has plans to expand in Louisiana and Texas in 2018/2019.

Chicken Salad Chick has headquarters in Auburn, Alabama. Both Yelp and Trip Advisor give the company 4.5 stars out of a 5-star rating system.

NewTown Hardware House

While an arson fire destroyed the store in 1899, it was rebuilt in the same place it stands today. Newtown Hardware House has been in operation since 1869 and is the oldest store in Pennsylvania. The company is just as famous for its facade and history as it is for the hardware, paint, and other items it sells within the 5,000 square foot business.

Newtown Hardware House was sold to William Newell in 2012. The corporate office still stands at the same address on State Street, where it has for more than 130 years.

Chicken Shack was founded by John and Lola Sobeck in 1956. After leaving the army, John wanted employment where he wouldn’t be fired and where he could leave something of value to his children. After tasting broasted chicken for the first time, John decided to open his own restaurant.

The original restaurant was so popular that they frequently sold out of chicken. John experimented with numerous recipes and began broasting their own chickens. Many of the recipes that John and Lola created are still used today, including the sauce on the ribs and the coleslaw.

Today, the company has 21 locations in and around the greater Detroit area. The Sobeck children and grandchildren own and operate the business, which is rumored to be expanding outside of Detroit in the next few years.
