Spirit Halloween stores were founded by Joe Marver, who thought Halloween costumes should be for more than just kids. He opened his first pop-up, seasonal store in the Castro Valley Mall, in Castro City, California, in 1983. Within a decade, he had more than 60 pop-up locations across the country.

The company has an online site that offers an enormous number of costumes for children, pets, and adults, as well as both indoor and outdoor Halloween decor. They also rely on empty stores and pop-up locations in malls and other sites to sell their products. Most stores open sometime in mid-August and close a few days after Halloween ends.

History

Spencer Gifts purchased the company in 1999 and has grown the business substantially to more than 1,100 locations, making it the largest Halloween retailer in the nation. It is estimated that the company will earn $9 billion in sales in 2018.

A large sinkhole was found in one Kentucky location in 2019, forcing the store to close for a short time. It is unknown how the sinkhole occurred, but no one was injured.

The company states that top Halloween costumes for 2019 include Stranger Things, Fortnite, and Baby Shark Doo Doo.

Headquarters for Spirit Halloween are located in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey.

Products that are ordered one day are manufactured the next either in Anaheim, California, or Ensenada, Mexico, which is near the border of California. Items are then shipped that day or the following day.

History

Forbes writes that “With new technology, 3 Day Blinds can track what keywords drove customers to make a phone call. For example, if a customer types a search into Google and gets the results for 3 Day Blinds, the website can create a unique phone number that lets the company know what keyword resulted in the call. Call center agents are also given a list of keywords related to the customers’ search that they can use to organically steer the conversation for best results”

The demand for window treatments is expected to explode in 2022.

Company headquarters are located in Irvine, California.

GoFundMe was founded in 2010 by Brad Damphousse and Andrew Ballester. Originally called CreateaFund in 2008, the pair changed the name in 2010 after making numerous updates and changes to the site.

The company is a for-profit, crowdfunding platform, where people list a need or want, along with the dollar amount they wish to raise, and others can donate to their cause. Since its inception, the company has raised more than $5 billion for more than 2 million campaigns.

One of the stars of the television show Gilligan’s Island, Dawn Wells, recently accepted nearly $200,000 in a GoFundMe account started in her name to help her pay for medical bills.

GoFundMe originally charged a 5% fee, taken from the money donated, however, in 2017, the company said that it will now accept donations or “tips” from people who are donating, so the recipient can receive the entire amount.

Although medical problems top the GoFundMe list, due to the coronavirus crisis and quarantine, there have been multiple requests ranging from an ice cream shop employee in Mashpee, Massachusetts, who quit after being verbally abused by customers upset by a long wait, to a Utah mother who lost her daughters in a flash flood, to a Dallas hair salon owner who was jailed for not respecting the quarantine.

In January 2022, a group called Freedom Convoy 2022, collected funds to protest Canada’s requirement of vaccination against Covid for cross-border truck drivers. The company shut down the account, which had reached $10 million in donations, saying that it was not a verified charity and that GoFundMe would refund all donations within 10 days.

GoFundMe was founded in San Diego, later noting a PO Box in Redwood City, California, only as their “corporate office address.”

Known as Value Village in the Pacific Northwest and Savers in other parts of the country and in Canada, the company has approximately 315 locations and had annual revenue in 2012 of $1 billion.

History

Value Village asks for donations from the public, as well as receiving items from non-profit charities for resale. The company is not a charity, however, it is a for-profit business that donates a small portion of their profits to charity. Some states believe that the company is misleading people into thinking that most of the money they receive goes to charities.

Both Washington and Minnesota states have filed lawsuits against the company stating that their aggressive ad campaigns have misled the public into thinking their donated items would end up with charities receiving money, when, in some cases, charities received nothing in return, while others received only 5% from the sale of donated items.

In October 2020, some state regulators were cracking down on misleading thrift store operations.

In March 2022, a person posted on Tik Tok that prices were out of control when they discovered used Mason canning jars for $10 and $15 each.

Savers and Value Village is owned by Berkshire Partners and TGP Capital. Headquarters for the company remain in Bellevue, Washington.

The company is hoping to appeal to a wide range of customers with a wide range of products. Birch Lane offers traditional furniture at “attainable prices.”One likely customer demographic for Birch Lane is made up of women between the ages of 35 and 55.

Birch Lane also issues annual catalogs, as well as specialty catalogs during certain times of the year.

Despite spending more than $500 million in advertising and seeing an increase in sales of more than 50%, the company posted a net loss for the second quarter of 2018 of $100 million.
