LimeBike was founded in January of 2017 by Toby Sun, Brad Bao, & Adam Zhang. The first location chosen for these electric scooters was the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The company operates a fleet of electric scooters and bicycles for rent in urban locations.

In July 2017, the company expanded into other states and cities including South Lake Tahoe, California, and South Bend, Indiana. Later that same month, the company put 500 bicycles on the streets of Seattle, Washington.

History

In May 2018, the company rebranded itself simply as Lime, although most people refer to the company as Lime Scooters.

In early 2018, the city of Coronado, California, impounded more than 100 Lime Bicycles, forcing the company to $9,300 to recover them.

In August 2018, the company signed up with Uber to provide Uber with electric bikes for their spin-off company, Uber Bike Service.

In May 2018, the company announced that they planned to deploy “transit pods” in 2019. Transit pods would be very small electric cars capable of holding no more than 2 persons.

The company has been widely criticized as their scooters and bikes are often dumped on sidewalks and other public spaces, creating a nuisance.

After talking to city officials, Lime dropped off 500 scooters in Virginia Beach on July 13, 2019. While city officials admitted that they had discussed a deal with Lime, they insist that nothing was firm and that they were just as surprised as residents to see the scooters.

Company headquarters were recently relocated to the building that Uber occupies in San Francisco, California.

MSC Cruises was founded in 1960 in Naples, Italy, by Achille Lauro originally under the name Lauro Lines. The company had two cruise ships in the 1960’s. In 1979, the Angelino Lauro burned to the ground in St. Thomas and in 1985, the Achille Lauro was hijacked by the Palestinian Liberation Front. In 1989, the company was sold to the Mediterranean Shipping Company and renamed to MSC Cruises in 1995.

The company currently has 15 cruise ships, with two more launching in 2019 and an additional 12 being built and scheduled to launch by 2026.

MSC Cruises is registered in Switzerland and is the world’s largest privately held cruise company, with more than 16,000 employees. The cruise line is the 4th largest in the world.

In 2017, the company launched “Seaside”, a cruise ship built especially for Americans and is the first MSC ship christened in the US.

In July 2018, the company announced that it was building a second port in Miami for their World-Class cruise lines. Company headquarters in the USA are located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The company designs and builds bicycles in Detroit, Michigan, with parts made in Asia. While some companies are selling cheaper bikes, Pashak says that not everyone is interested in the cheapest possible bicycle they can buy. Pashak says that his bikes cost more, but they are better built because they are built in the USA.

History

The company also makes custom bikes for clients and Pashak says he makes about 150 bicycles every day. This CEO is perhaps one of the few who thinks that Trump’s tariffs on imported goods are a great idea, mainly because his bikes are American made.

The company uses an old warehouse for assembly and design. Headquarters are located in Detroit, Michigan. In 2016, the company lost $150,000 but Pashak believes that the bike industry as a whole is looking up.

Detroit Bikes was founded by current CEO Zak Pashak in 2011. In 1999 David Bolotsky visited the Smithsonian Museum craft show and marveled at the unique, handmade goods on display. He believed that there was a great demand for such items while recognizing that many artists traveled great distances to sell their wares.

This led to the creation of Uncommon Goods. Bolotsky began by traveling and purchasing items he found at arts and craft shows, then listing and selling them. The demand became so great that he soon outgrew his apartment for business use.

History

The company offers environmentally sustainable, handmade or minimally machined items online. Uncommon Goods also publishes catalogs, often suggesting gift ideas or products that compliment each other.

Amazon is the company’s main competition, but Bolotsky believes that his superior selection of items, faster shipping, and customer service will win customer’s over. Amazon, as Bolotsky notes, does not do catalogs, something many people still find appealing.

Uncommon Goods is also known for being a “B” company, as well as paying higher than required wages. Employees who feel good about their jobs do better at their jobs is the motto at this ecommerce retailer.

Headquarters for Uncommon Goods is located in Brooklyn, New York.

Vanessa Chavez grew up in Oakland, California, where eating with her multicultural family was a tradition that was not to be broken. After traveling for 7 years to her grandmother’s homeland of Peru and learning cooking skills from her Chinese/Peruvian mother and Cuban/Mexican father, Chavez knew she had to open her own restaurant.

The first location was at the local Jack London Square Farmer’s market, but business was so brisk that people were soon lining up around the block. Chavez added other locations at a variety of Farmer’s market’s in the area, but soon people were asking when they would open a more permanent restaurant. Their first brick and mortar restaurant is located in the Temescal area of Oakland, but Chavez says that soon they will need to open a second location.

History

In July 2014, San Francisco Magazine listed the company as having the Best Fish Tacos in the Bay area. The restaurant offers a wide range of interesting tacos and sandwiches, including her grandmothers pulled pork Peruvian tacos and sandwiches, along with fried snapper and plantains, fried tilapia tacos, and spit-roasted chicken.
