CIENA Corporation was founded in 1992 by Optelecom in conjunction with David Huber, Kevin Kimberlin, and Lawrence Huang.

Soon after the company began working with Sprint to expand Sprint’s all-digital fiber-optic network. After the work was completed, this network had increased Sprint’s capacity by 1,600 percent and went on to become the largest Internet traffic carrier in the world at that time.

Due to this success, CIENA Corporation had the highest first year sales of any start-up in 1996.

Today the company makes transport and switching equipment that increases capacity of long-distance fiber-optic networks, sells optical transport systems, and provides broadband access products that enable communications companies to deliver services such as VoIP, video, and DSL.

AOL Corporate Office

AOL has its roots in the short-lived venture Control Video Corporation (CVC), which was founded by Bill von Meister.  CVC was an online game service for Atari 2600 (video game console).

In 1985 Jim Kimsey founded the online services company Quantum Computer Services from the remnants of CVC.

Quantum changes its name to America Online in 1989.

During the 1990’s, the company experienced explosive growth when the general public discovered the internet and started to explore chat rooms, online role-playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons, and AOL messenger. At its height in 1997, half of all American households that had internet, had it through AOL.

In 2000 AOL merged with Time Warner, creating the new company AOL Time Warner.

Today AOL is no longer part of Time Warner since it was spun-off to shareholders in 2009. The company serves users through popular sites TheHuffingtonPost.com, MapQuest, Moviephone, Patch (local information), Engadget and TechCrunch.

Cablevision was founded in 1973 by Charles Dolan as Sterling Manhattan Cable. He launched HBO on this cable system soon after.

He later sold both HBO and the cable system to Time Life, Inc. He used the money from the sale to start a new cable system in Long Island called Cablevision.

In the 1980’s Cablevision expanded to Boston, Chicago, and Cleveland.

By the 1990’s the company had 2.9 million customers in 19 states.

Today Cablevision provides digital television, phone, and internet services in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and parts of Pennsylvania. Its operations also include newspaper publishing and cable television advertising, and movie theaters.

Prior to starting the company Parsons had founded and sold his financial services company Parson’s Technology Inc. for several million dollars to Intuit.

In 1999 a group of employees at Jomax decided to change the name of the company. They decided on GoDaddy because it made people smile and remember it.

Today GoDaddy provides both businesses and individuals with internet services such as domain registration and website hosting, along with software and services for website creation, e-commerce, and podcasting.

The company has 53 million domain names under management.

As of 2018, the company was the largest domain host by market share, with 62 million registered domain names. 

On April 1, 2015, GoDaddy had a successful IPO on the New York Stock Exchange, with the stock soaring 30% on the first day of trading. The ticker symbol is GDDY. 

Founder Bob Parsons continues to be the majority stakeholder.

GoDaddy maintains a corporate office in Scottsdale, Arizona.
