Medtronic Corporate Office

Medtronic is a leading manufacturer of implantable biomedical devices.

The company was founded in 1949 by Earl Bakken and Palmer Hermundslie as a medical equipment repair store.

Through their business the partners met Dr. C. Walton Lillehei. Dr. Lillehei was a heart surgeon and was frustrated with the pacemakers of the day. He asked Bakken to develop a battery-powered pacemaker.

Bakken did so, and the company improved upon the design through research, eventually designing the first implantable pacemaker in 1960.

Today Medtronic operates in segments: Cardiac and Vascular Group and Restorative Therapies Group. The first produces catheters, stents, valves, balloons, and surgical technologies used to treat vascular and cardiac diseases. The latter makes nerve and brain stimulation devices, implantable drug delivery systems, products used to manage diabetes, and surgical devices for ear, nose, and throat and spinal conditions.

Medtronic is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol MDT, is a member of the S&P 500, is #172 in the Fortune 500, has 45,000 employees, and had $17 billion in revenue in 2013.

Originally, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints operated many of the hospitals in the region. In 1974 the church decided to donate its 15 hospitals to the intermountain community, with the provision that a not-for-profit organization would be formed to operate the hospitals.

In 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005 Intermountain Healthcare was ranked #1 among 600 evaluated integrated healthcare systems in the United States.

In 2009 Intermountain Healthcare was identified as a model in healthcare by president Barack Obama.

Today Intermountain Healthcare provides medical and hospital services in Utah and Idaho and offers integrated managed care under the insurance brand SelectHealth.

Thenon-profit health system operates 22 hospitals and 800 physicians and 185 urgent care clinics. In addition, it operates health care agencies and rehabilitation centers.

The company grew quickly by insuring large groups of construction workers doing work in the region.

During World War II expanded defense spending led to increased workers in the Richmond Shipyard. Henry Kaiser set up an insurance plan for these workers. This entity survived the shipyard project, and is the direct descendant of Kaiser Permanente.
