In 1985 Peter Kiewitt  Sons Inc., a construction company, created a subsidiary named Kiewitt Diversified Group to manage the company’s non-construction business.

In 1998 Kiewitt Diversified Group was spun-off as a communications services company and renamed Level 3 Communications.

Today the company is the operator of one of the world’s largest fiber-optic communications networks, connecting customers in 55 countries. Services offered include internet access, voice origination and termination, content distribution, and broadband transport.

During World War II Manitowoc  built 28 submarines for the U.S. Navy.
