The North Face was founded in 1966 by Douglas and Susie Tompkins in San Francisco, California. The company originally offered only climbing equipment, later adding ski wear, backpacks, and camping equipment.

Today, the company is a subsidiary of the VF Corporation, who also owns the backpack maker JanSport. Between the two subsidiaries, they account for almost 50percent of all backpack sales in the US. The company offers its products in more than 55 retail outlets, an active eCommerce site, as well as 20 outlet locations.

The North Face clothing has become incredibly popular over the past decade, with jackets being such a hot item that they are being stolen from students during robberies. The company sponsors many athletes, including the Ultra Trail Tour de Mont Blanc winner Lizzy Hawker.

LensCrafters was founded in 1983 by former Procter & Gamble manager E. Dean Butler. Butler sold the company to United States Shoe Corporation in 1985 but remained as president and CEO until 1987.

The company is an international retailer of prescription glasses, prescription sunglasses and contact lenses. LensCrafters originally had just a single store in 1983 but now has more than 850 stores throughout the U.S., Canada, Hong Kong, Puerto Rico, and more than 90 locations in California alone.

LensCrafters is a subsidiary of Luxottica, which is the largest eye wear company in the world and is based out of Italy. Luxottica saw increased revenue in 2014 of more than 18%, fueled by demand for Ray Ban brand sunglasses in particular.
