Christmas Tree Shops Corporate Office

Christmas Tree Shops were founded in 1970 in Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts, by Doreen and Chuck Bilezikian. The name comes from the original concept of three stores in one; The Front Shop, The Back Shop, and The Barn Shop. This is why the name is called Christmas Trees Shops, rather than the singular “Shop”.

The company operates a chain of discount stores offering everything from patio furniture to blankets, food to toys, household goods to Christmas items. The focus is on Christmas items, including lights, decorations, and trees, but the company sells a very wide variety of just about everything under the sun.

Christmas Tree Shops has 83 locations and was purchased by Bed, Bath & Beyond in 2003. The company operates as a fully owned subsidiary.

Harriet Carter Corporate Office

Harriet Carter Logo

Harriet Carter started a home based mail order business out of her kitchen in 1958 in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania. Carter’s children helped to package and fill orders. Some of the first orders for the company were decorative wood switch plate covers, which were made and stained to order, in the family basement.

Today, the company has grown substantially. From the original 4 page catalog, the company now prints more than 100 pages and typically ads 1,000 items each year to their inventory.

Harriet Carter still sells via mail order catalogs, but also has an online business as well. The company is known for selling gifts, household items, and useful items or tools for the home including kitchen utensils, candles, and “As Seen On TV” items.

Harriet Carter reduced staff and considered going out of business in 2019 but instead changed to an eCommerce business.

In October 2020, the company sold its showroom and a large warehouse.

The company maintains a corporate office in Montgomeryville, Pennslyvania.

See’s Candies was founded in 1921 by Mary See, her son Charles and his wife Florence in Los Angeles, California. Mary See had developed her candy recipes while helping her husband run a hotel in Ontario. After her husband’s death, Mary and her son moved to Los Angeles and used her recipes to sell candy. Even throughout the Great Depression, there was a demand for See’s unique recipes. By the mid-1920’s, the company had more than 12 locations in California. The Bakersfield store was the first of its kind to have a white, all porcelain store.

In 1952, Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance spent a half day at the See’s Candies store on La Cienega Boulevard in Los Angeles, learning to dip chocolates and work the production line, in preparation for the “Job Switching” episode of I Love Lucy. The episode, which featured Lucy and Ethel getting jobs in a chocolate factory, became one of the most popular in the show’s history. see 6

The family sold the business in 1972 to Berkshire Hathaway, Inc. for $25 million. Today, there are more than 200 stores in the US and few in Hong Kong, Japan, and Macau. The company has more than 1500 full-time employees and as many as 6,000 during peak holiday seasons, such as Christmas and Mother’s Day.  see 3

The majority of See’s Candies are sold in their own stores, but there is an online ordering service and, during the holidays, the company sells from kiosks in shopping malls or other types of shopping centers.
