Proto Tools Corporate Office

Proto Tools, originally called Plomb Tools, was founded in 1907 by Alphonse Plomb and Charles Williams in Los Angeles, California. Originally working as a blacksmith, the company is accredited with creating the first combination wrench in 1933. The company makes and distributes hand tools.

The company has acquired numerous other tool manufacturing companies over the years, including Cragin Tool, P&C Tool, and J.P. Danielson. In 1946, the company was sued for copyright infringement by another tool manufacturer, J.R. Plumb. The company decided to change the name to “Proto”.

Today, Proto Tools is owned by Stanley Black & Decker, who acquired the company in 1984.

Follett Corporate Office

Follett was founded in 1873 in Wheaton, Illinois by Charles Barnes. Barnes opened a used bookstore, using part of his home as a business. After a few years, business improved substantially, so Barnes moved to an office in Chicago, selling new and used books, as well as stationery items. Barnes sold the company in 1917 and later founded what is known today as Barnes and Noble bookstores.

The company was sold to C.W. Follett in 1918 and he renamed it Follett Publishing Company. Today, Follett provides educational technology, textbooks, and digital content to many schools in the US, for kindergartners through high school, as well as material for public libraries. The company is focusing on text rentals, eCommerce, and digital materials.

What began as a home business has grown into a $2.7 billion, privately owned company which provides more than 5 million students with the materials they need for their education. The company employs more than 18,000 people in the US, Canada, and other countries.

In 2016, the company acquired online book seller Valore for an undisclosed amount.

Meineke Car Care was founded by Sam Meineke in Houston, Texas., in 1972 The original name of the company was Meineke Discount Mufflers. Franchising operations began the following year. The name was changed in 2003.

Shakey’s Pizza was founded in Sacramento, California, in 1954 by Sherwood “Shakey” Johnson and Ed Plummer. Johnson used to play dixieland jazz piano in the restaurant most nights. Perdue Farms was founded in 1920 by Arthur and Pearl Perdue, who had a small chicken farm. The company began by selling eggs, but later built a hatchery and sold chicks to other farmers. The company is still family owned and operated.

Today, Perdue Farms is one of America’s largest providers of chicken, turkey and pork. In addition to farms, the company also owns processing plants. Perdue Farms is the parent company of Perdue Foods and Perdue Agribusiness. Estimates are that the company has $6 billion in annual revenue or more, and at least 21,000 full time employees.
