During the Great Depression, Primanti invented his infamous sandwich, which contains grilled meat, coleslaw made with Italian dressing, tomatoes, and a few French fries on Italian bread. This sandwich is still the signature favorite of the restaurant.

Today, Primanti Brothers operates a chain of casual restaurants, which feature Joe’s sandwiches. There are 16 locations throughout the Pittsburgh area and a few more on the Eastern seaboard. It has long been a tradition to have a Primanti Brothers sandwich after the local bars close at 2 AM.

The company has been named in several publications and television shows, including National Geographic and Man vs. Food. In 2008. President Obama and Jon Stewart visited a Primanti Brothers restaurant after Stewart recommended that the President try one of their famous sandwiches.

In 2022, President Biden and Senate candidate John Fetterman visited a Primanti Brothers location in Pittsburgh.

Max and Erma’s was founded in 1972 in Columbus, Ohio, by two businessmen, Todd Barnum and Barry Zacks, who purchased a tavern called Max and Erma’s. They converted the tavern into a restaurant and decided to leave the name the way it was.

The company operates a chain of casual dining restaurants, each with its own theme. Max and Erma’s was acquired by equity investor G&R Acquisitions of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for $10.2 million in 2008. The company has 51 locations, all company owned.

The chain filed for bankruptcy in 2009, after which it was acquired by American Blue Ribbon Holdings, who also own Baker’s Square and Village Inn. In January of 2016, Glacier Restaurant Group acquired the company.
