Best Market, also known as Best Yet Market, was founded in New York by the Raitses family in 1994. The company’s focus is on fresh produce and meats, but they also offer other types of groceries, including the family label BBQ sauce and local craft beer.

In 2002, the company changed its name to Best Yet Markets, but some older stores are still labeled with the old signage.

The company began as a corner fruit and vegetable stand but quickly moved into larger quarters. Today, Best Market has 30 stores in New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut. A flagship store was opened in Harlem, New York, in 2010.

Beginning in 2015, the company began expanding through acquisitions, usually taking over A&P locations. Many of the newer locations are going green, getting their electricity from rooftop solar panels, an all-hybrid vehicle fleet and electric charging stations for employees and customers.

Stop & Shop can trace its roots back to 1892 when Solomon and Jeanie Rabinovitz opened their first produce store near Boston, called “The Greenie Store”. This location closed in 1908 but the Rabinovitz family opened another store in Somerville, Massachusetts, called Economy Grocery Store. Like the original, this store began by selling produce, but quickly added other food items, such as milk and meats. By 1917, the company had 15 locations.

Even during the Great Depression, Stop & Shop continued to be successful. By 1929, the company had 435 stores. The company name was officially changed to Stop & Shop in 1945. By 1949, the company was reaching $50 million in revenue.

Stop & Shop entered the Rhode Island and Connecticut markets in the early 1950s, New York in the early 1960s, and New Jersey in the late 1960s. In 1972, the company built the most technically sophisticated meat processing and distribution plant in its time in Marlboro, Massachusetts.

In 1982, the company built its first superstore in Springfield, Massachusetts. These Superstores were between 45,000 square feet and 80,000 square feet. In addition to traditional supermarket offerings, these stores featured bakeries, pharmacies, moderate selections of general merchandise one would not expect to find at a supermarket, such as hardware items or socks, expanded deli departments, cafes, and a salad bar. Some of these stores would also contain a bank, expanded liquor sections, along with beer, and video rentals.

In 2007, Stop & Shop asked customers to submit stories and videos regarding their shopping experience as a means of promoting the value and camaraderie of shopping at their stores. The company introduced a smartphone app, along with a loyalty program and coupons in 2010.

In December 2022, the company began selling fresh food items that were close to their expiration date via the FlashFood app.

Fresh Thyme Farmers Market was founded in 2012 by current CEO Chris Sherrell. Sherrell had more than 30 years in the grocery business when he saw an opportunity to put a more natural foods type of market in the mid-West, he went for it.

The company is a combination of Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s. The focus is on natural health foods in bulk quantities, eliminating most packaging and pre-packaged foods.

Since the first opening of their store in Illinois in 2014, the company has had an eye on expansion. Currently, there are 66 locations in 10 states, including Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Nebraska, Indiana, Iowa, Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, and Pennsylvania. At this rate of growth, the company is scheduled to have 150 locations by 2020. There are currently plans to open 10 more locations in 2018; this after opening 20 locations in 2017.

Fresh Thyme features smaller stores which focus on produce, fresh meat, and dairy and for the most part, reject the traditionally packaged foods. In fact, fresh produce accounts for as much as 25 to 30 percent of sales at the company, compared to 12 to 15 percent for larger grocery stores.

In early 2017, the company introduced their own label of packaged foods, stressing the organic label and quality. The company currently has more than 800 products that carry their name, while hoping to increase that number to 2.000 by the end of 2018. In November of the same year, the company launched their own mobile app named MyThyme, designed to offer rewards, coupons, online receipts, and personalized shopping lists for both Android and Apple phones.

Roche Brothers Market was founded by brothers Pat and Bud Roche in 1952 when Bud saw a Singer Sewing Machine store going out of business. Both brothers put $25 in the bank and called their new company The Roche Brothers. Their family took out a mortgage on their home to get this pair started and three months later, they opened their store.

The company began selling meat and produce but soon expanded to include other groceries by 1957. A second location in Needham, Massachusetts, was opened in 1959 and a third, this time in West Roxbury, in 1957. The company is still owned and operated by the second generation of Roches, Rick & Ed.

Today, the company has 20 locations in and around the greater Boston area. In 1980, the company opened Sudbury Farms, a bulk food store which also offers a fish market, deli, and organic foods. There are three Sudbury Farm locations. There are plans for expansion in 2018, with the expected opening of 3 new locations with a new name Brothers Marketplace. All 3 locations are expected to open in 2018 in Waltham, East Cambridge, and Weston.
