Aldi Corporate Office

aldi 1

Aldi can trace its roots back to Karl and Theo Albrecht’s mother who opened a small store near Essen.  The Albrecht brothers took over the business in 1946.  By 1950, they had 13 stores.

In 1960, the brothers split the chain over an argument on whether they should sell cigarettes at the checkout.  They owned 300 stores at the time.

In 1962, the name Aldi was adopted which is short for Albrecht-Diskount.  aldi 3

The company expanded internationally in the 1970s and 80s.  The first US location was opened in 1976.

In 1993, the Albrecht brothers retired and donated most of their wealth to charitable foundations.

Today, Aldi is one of the largest discount supermarket chains in the world.  There are currently over 9,200 locations worldwide.  1200 of those are US locations.  The company operates as two divisions: Aldi Nord and Aldi Sud. Aldi Sud (South) includes the US.

aldi 4

In June 2017, the company stated that it would invest $3.4 billion to expand its U.S. store base to 2,500 locations by 2022. Currently, the company has about 1,600 locations. Aldis has also stated that they intend to spend another $1.3 billion remodeling most of their current stores.

In June 2023, Aldi’s stated that it was facing a $10 million lawsuit about deceptive marketing and labels.

Due to the relatively low staffing of Aldi locations compared to other supermarket chains, the company has a reputation of starting employees out at a significantly higher rate than,  which is unusual among American supermarkets. aldi 2

Safeway was originally founded in American Falls, Idaho, when Marion Barton Skaggs purchased his father’s grocery store for $1,089 in 1915.  Originally called Skaggs United, Marion enlisted the help of his 5 brothers to help expand the business. In 1925, Skaggs doubled the number of stores when he purchased Sam Seelig’s grocery stores. The name was then changed to Safeway.

By 1932, there were 3400 Safeway stores.

In 1959, the first store was opened in Alaska.

In 1986, the company was taken private by private equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts.  The company subsequently sold off many of its holdings to pay down assumed debt.

In 1990, the company went public again.

Safeway, like many other grocery chains, is trying to entice customers into shopping online and having them delivered but most customers would rather shop at the stores, according to Forbes.

Today, Safeway has over 900 stores in the United States and 224 stores in Canada.  80% of the stores are located in the Western parts of each country.

Meijer Corporate Office

Meijer Building

Meijer was founded in 1934 in Greenville, Michigan, by Hendrik Meijer, a Dutch immigrant. Originally a barber, Meijer decided to try the grocery business during the Great Depression. The first employee was Hendrik’s 14-year-old son Frederik (Fred) Meijer.  Additional locations were opened in Ionia and Cedar Springs.

By the 1960s, there were two dozen locations in Western Michigan. Meijer Store Front

In 1962, the first modern layout “supercenter” design was opened in Grand Rapids. Fred Meijer took over the business when his father passed away in 1964.

Under increased competition from Wal-Mart, Meijer has had to lay off a significant number of employees in recent years.  They have also outsourced almost all their Information Technology positions to India.

In 2011, long time CEO Fred Meijer passed away at the age of 91. In November of that same year, the company opened up their 200th supercenter in Swartz Creek, Michigan.

In 2013, the company ranked No. 19 in Forbes list of top 20 Private Companies. Meijer Checkout LIne

In 2017, Meijer expanded into the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, with stores in Escanaba and Sault. Saint Marie, with a third location opening in the near future in Marquette. Meijer Produce Aisle

Almost all Meijer locations are open 24/7/364, closing only at 7 PM on Christmas Eve and reopening at 6 AM on December 26th.

In December 2019, Michigan Meijer’s locations are setting up SOS payment kiosks for vehicle registration.

In May 2022, some Meijer customers found that their debit or credit cards were charged multiple times over several days for a single purchase. Meijer claims the problem lies in their processing company.

Today, Meijer is one of America’s largest private companies.  They operate more than 200 stores in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, and Kentucky. In 2016, the company had annual revenue of $16.6 billion.

Wawa Corporate Office

wawa 7

Wawa began in 1803 as a dairy farm.  George Wood imported cows and sold “sanitary” milk to school children, who used to become sick from raw milk. Wood had doctors “approve” his milk as safe, which convinced many parents to buy his milk for their families.

The company grew rapidly as demand for dairy products increased.

In the 1960s, consumers began to buy milk from grocery stores, so Wawa transitioned to a convenience store in order to sell their own milk. In 1964, Wood opened his first convenience store in Folsom, Pennsylvania.

By 1989, there were 400 Wawa stores.

In 2003, the company began to construct a new distribution center in Carney’s Point, NJ.

Wawa launched its own line of soda in 2007. wawa 2

Wawa was among the first convenience stores to implement self-service computerized touch-screen menus for food orders, in an attempt to improve order accuracy.

wawa 3

Wawa provides surcharge-free ATMs, the result of a partnership with PNC Bank, which started this program back in 1985. The company implemented this program in stores in 1996. In 2010, Wawa surpassed 1 billion transactions under the PNC brand.

There are currently nearly 750 Wawa locations in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and Florida.

In 2022, the company announced that it would be opening its first stores in Georgia by the end of 2024.

The name WaWa comes from the city where the corporate office is located. Wawa is the Ojibwe word for the Canadian Goose, which is the store symbol.

In September 2022, WaWa asked House candidate Matt Jenkins to stop using their goose logo as his campaign logo, stating that it was a copyright infringement.
