Raley’s Supermarket, also known as Raley’s Family of Fine Stores, was founded in Placerville, California, in 1935 by Thomas Raley. Originally named Raley’s Drive-In Market, the company now has headquarters in Sacramento, California.

The company operates a chain of supermarkets mainly in and around the Sacramento area under the names Nob Hill Foods, Food Source, Raley’s, and Bel Air Markets. The company is still family owned and operated by Raley’s daughter and son-in-law. Raley’s Supermarket had annual revenue in 2016 of $3.2 billion. There are currently 121 locations and more than 12,000 full-time employees.

Raley’s also operates 11 Aisle 1 gas stations and has been rated as #38 in the 2009 list of Top 75 North American Food Retailers. The company has stiff competition from other markets, such as Costco, and was forced to close a few underperforming locations in 2012.

Joyce Raley Teel, the only daughter of founder Thomas Raley, passed away in 2022. Her husband Jim continues as CEO.

In September 2022, the company began offering Door Dash for home delivery service.

Brown Dog Creamery Corporate Office

Brown Dog Creamery was founded in 2015 in Northville, Michigan by two friends, Brian Scherle and Paul Gabriel. They wanted to create an ice cream shop that was unlike any other. The name comes from a rescue dog, whose name is actually Flash. Unable to create a company name using the word Flash, they simply decided to name it after the dog’s color.

The company offers uniquely flavored ice creams, made in very small batches, as well as ice cream cakes and other desserts. Brown Dog recently opened a second location in Farmington, Michigan, called Brown Dog Creamery and Dessert Bar. The second location has a liquor license, and many of the ice creams and desserts contain liquor. One favorite is a root beer float that includes bourbon.

Brown Dog Cremery prides itself on making very small batches of ice cream, generally no larger than 4 gallons, by hand and making labels for their products by hand. The company offers pre-orders for cakes and catering, as well as gift cards.

Luby’s operates a chain of cafeteria style restaurants which feature made from scratch foods similar to the ones made in most American homes. During the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, Luby’s offers meal packages for customers to take home.

Today, Luby’s operates numerous restaurants under the names Luby’s, Fuddruckers, Koo Koo Roo, and Cheeseburger in Paradise. There are currently Luby’s restaurants, 195 Fuddruckers locations in the US, 10 Koo Koo Roo restaurants, and 8 Cheeseburger in Paradise restaurants. The company had annual revenue in 2014 of $400.8 million and more than 8,200 full time employees.

Au Bon Pain Corporate Office

Au Bon Pain was founded in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1977 by Louis Rapuano. The company operates a chain of bakery/cafe’s which feature foods cooked with freshly made baked goods made at the restaurant. The name is French and roughly means “a place for good bread”.

The first location was in Boston’s Fanieul Hall and it featured a bakery with glass walls so customers could see their baked goods being made, a revolutionary concept in 1977. The company focus is on fresh baked goods, including croissants, bagels, pastries, and bread. In 2014, the company hired chef Katherine See as their head chef. The company is owned by LNK Management, a private equity firm, who acquired it in 2008.

As of 2014, the company had 243 locations, with 108 of these being franchised, as well as numerous locations in other countries, including India and Thailand. Most restaurants are found in hospitals, airports, shopping centers, and universities.

MacKenzie River Pizza Corporate Office

MacKenzie River Pizza was founded in 1993 in Bozeman, Montana. From the single pizza restaurant, the company has grown substantially to 24 locations in 7 states, and more being developed each year. Franchising began in 1995.

The company offers much more than simply pizza, some newer locations are named MacKenzie River Pizza Grill and Pub. These locations offer an assortment of beer, sandwiches, salads, burgers, tacos, and flatbreads. Most locations have a “lumberjack”or woodland feel to them, with furnishings coming from beetle damaged pine trees and old whiskey barrels.

As of 2005, the company launched an eco-friendly program whereby the company focuses on being energy efficient and sustainable. All lights and computers are turned off at the close of the day, pre-consumer food waste is donated to feed animals, and water conservation is monitored.
