Lazy Dog Restaurant was founded in 2003 in Westminster, California, by Chris Simms. The original name of the restaurant was going to be Rocky Mountain Cafe, Simm’s thought the name was too “stuffy” for what he had in mind. Decorating the first restaurant with pictures of hound dogs, he decided on Lazy Dog.

The company is best known for its eclectic menu, which offers everything from pizza to Chinese food, as well as its policy of allowing dogs (with leashes) on the outdoor patio. In addition to food, the company sells merchandise, such as shirts and mugs, with the Lazy Dog logo.

Lazy Dog Restaurant now has 40 locations, with another location due to open in Downey, California, in late 2017 and one in Stafford, Texas, in 2022. 

In May 2022, the company added some new menu items to help keep things from becoming boring. 

Company headquarters are now located in Huntington Beach, California.

Grocery Outlet was founded in 1946 in San Francisco, California, by  James Read, who purchased surplus government food and resold the items in rented vacant stores in and around the greater San Francisco area. Originally called Cannery Sales, the company changed its name in 1970 to Canned Foods, which was changed again in 1987 to Grocery Outlet, when James sons, Steven and Peter, took over the company.

Foods Co store layouts greatly resemble Food 4 Less in that there are frequently disorganized aisles with actively working forklifts moving pallets. Many, however, feel that this is well worth the lower food prices. Company headquarters are located in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Today, the company is the third largest ice cream maker in the US. In addition to ice cream, the company has expanded to sell fruit juice, milk, and yogurt products. Demand for their products has forced the company to build larger and larger processing plants and new corporate offices. The most recent expansion has been a 900,000 square foot processing plant, including a 12 story tall freezer.

Blue Bunny Ice Cream is still family owned and operated by Wells Enterprises. Company headquarters are now located in Le Mars, Iowa.
