CHS Corporate Office

CHS, Inc. has its roots in the 1929 organization of the regional cooperative, North Pacific Grain Growers, Inc (NPGG). The Farmers Union Grain Terminal Association (GTA) was founded in 1938. These two cooperatives eventually merged in 1983 to form the Harvest States Cooperatives.

In 1931 Farmers Union Central Exchange was founded in Minnesota. This cooperative later became Cenex, which became a seed, plant, and food business. They later expanded into transportation, convenience stores, and gas stations.

In 1998 Cenex and Harvard States merged to form the Cenex Harvest States Cooperatives, an integrated agricultural food systems company that linked producers to consumers.

In 2000 CHS Cooperatives was adopted as the new name of the company, and then CHS, Inc. in 2003. Cenex is the company’s energy brand.

Today CHS, Inc. is a Fortune 100 business owned by U.S. agricultural cooperatives, farmers, ranchers, and thousands of preferred stockholders. They own and operate food processing and wholesale, farm supply, Cenex brand fuel, financial services, and retail businesses. They are also co-owner of Ventura Foods, a processor of vegetable oil. Their revenue for 2012 was $40.6 billion.

During the 1970s Sysco grew steadily due to their continued diversification into new products, such as fish, meat, and fresh produce.

In 1976 Sysco acquired Mid-Central Fish and Frozen Foods, which expanded the company’s distribution capabilities to the national level.

During the 1980s Sysco acquired several of their competitors, making it the largest food distribution company by the end of the decade.

In 1991 they spun off their chain restaurant distribution system into a new company called SYGMA.

Ttoday Sysco provides meals to hospitals, educational facilities, restaurants, and lodging facilities. They also produce equipment and supplies for the foodservice and hospitality industries.  They have more than 400,000 clients throughout the United States, Canada, and most recently, Ireland.

Bunge Limited was founded in 1818 as Bunge y Born in Amsterdam. In 1884 they expanded to Argentina, in 1905 to Brazil, and later to the U.S.

The company built its first major grain handling facility in Minnesota in 1935, thus becoming an originator of grain in North America. In 1946 the company acquired grain elevators in the Midwest and in 1961 opened an export grain-handling elevator in Louisiana that connected its domestic grain operations to world markets.

During the 1970s and 1980s Bunge grew its product and operational diversity by acquiring and building grain origination, soy processing, and food products businesses throughout North and South America.

The recipe for the soft drink Pepsi was developed in the 1880s by Caleb Bradham. He created the Pepsi-Cola Company in 1902 and registered for the recipe patent in 1903.  The company went bankrupt in 1931 and was bought by Charles Guth.

Charles Guth was the president of Loft, Incorporated, a leading candy manufacturer with a large chain of restaurants and candy shops. He used Loft’s chemists to reformulate the syrup and contracted to stock soda in the restaurants, which were known for their soda fountains.

In 1935 Loft’s shareholders sued Guth for his 91% stake in the company. Loft won the lawsuit and as a result the company formally absorbed Pepsi in 1941 and it was rebranded by Pepsi Cola Company.

In the 1960s Pepsi’s line of products expanded with the creation of Diet Pepsi and Mountain Dew.

In 1965 the Pepsi Cola Company merged with Frito-Lay and became PepsiCo, Inc.

From the 1970s through the 1990s PepsiCo expanded by acquiring new brands outside of its core business of packaged food and beverages. It later sold these brands to refocus on the core business. Examples of these brands are Pizza Hut, KFC, California Pizza Kitchen, and Wilson Sporting Goods.

These large divestments were followed by acquisitions, notably of Tropicana Products in 1998. PepsiCo merged with Quaker Oats Company in 2001, which added the Gatorade sports drink line

In 2010 the company completed a $7 billion acquisition of its two largest bottlers in North America.

Today PepsiCo has 22 product lines that generate retail sales of $1 billion each. By net revenue, PepsiCo is the largest food and beverage business in the United States and the second largest in the world. PepsiCo has 300,000 employees worldwide, is part of the S&P 500, and had $65 billion in revenue in 2012.

In September 2022, Pepsico stopped production of all products in Russia due to the ongoing war with Ukraine.

While Pepsico stock is currently running strong, insiders at the company sold $11 million worth of stock, indicating they expect the stock to weaken in the future. 

Pepsi headquarters are located in Purchase, New York.

In 1970 Dwayne Andreas became CEO and began the process of transforming the company into an industrial powerhouse. He was CEO until 1997, when he was succeeded by his nephew, G. Allen Andreas.

Today ADM’s products include additives for fuel, food, and ingredients. The company has 270 plants and 420 crop procurement facilities worldwide, where oilseeds and grains are processed into animal feed, food, beverage, nutraceutical, and industrial products.

ADM has heavily invested in ethanol, bioenergy, and biofuels.
