By 1979 the chain had grown to 79 newspapers. This practice was credited with keeping the newspaper industry financially viable.

Fortune Brands Home & Security has its roots in the 1890 founding of American Tobacco Company. In the 1960’s the company diversified its product base and changed its name to American Brands, Inc.

From the 1960’s until the 2000’s when the company began to spin off divisions, its four main products were office supplies, golf products, home and hardware products, and spirits.

American Brands was renamed Fortune Brands in 1997.

In 2005 the company spun-off its office supplies division, and in 2010 and 2011 sold its golf brands.

In 2011 the remaining divisions were split, with spirits becoming Beam Inc. Beam is now owned by Japan’s Suntory.

Home and Hardware became Fortune Brands Home & Security.

Today Fortune Brands Home & Security is a consumer products manufacturer. The company makes and sells kitchen and bathroom cabinets, doors, faucets, windows and padlocks.

Dole Food Company traces its roots back to the 1851 founding of Castle & Cooke, a company that invested in shipping, railroad construction, sugar production, and seafood packing. Founded by Samuel Castle and Amos Cooke, originally from Boston, the company quickly became one of the largest companies in Hawaii, long before it became a state.

In 1932 Castle & Cooke purchased a 21% interest in Dole’s Hawaiian Pineapple Company. In 1960 the company acquired the remainder of the Hawaiian Pineapple Company as well as the Standard Fruit Company. It renamed this combined company The Dole Food Company.

In 1961 Dole became the third largest producer and U.S. importer of bananas.

In 2004 Dole acquired Coastal Berry Company and in 2011, Sunnyridge Farms. Both of these companies now put Dole in the berry business. Dole remains one of the top 2 banana companies in the world. In 2011, Dole reported annual revenue of $7.2 billion.

Today Dole Food Company is the world’s largest producer of fresh fruit and vegetables with 200 food products that are sourced,  grown, processed, marketed, and distributed in more than 90 countries.

In addition to Hawaii, the company also has plantations in South America, as well as 19 container ships which have specially fitted refrigerated units, as well as their own private cranes to load and unload shipments. Dole 7

The company has had several recalls in recent years, most of them for Listeria contamination. The most recent outbreak was a Listerious outbreak in 2016 in packaged salads.

Dole Food Company has been privately held since 2011, is valued at $1.5 billion, is #331 in the Fortune 500 and has nearly 35,000 employees.

The concept for CarMax was developed by Circuit City executives in 1993 after it was proposed by a consultant who was hired to evaluate new business opportunities for the company.

Today CarMax is the largest specialty used car retailer in the United States with 225 superstores in 41 states, mainly in the Midwest and Southeast.

The company also sells used vehicles through 325,000 in-store auctions at 225 stores and operates four new-car franchises.

In April 2022, the company had sizeable stock gains due to the red hot used car market. 

Also in April 2022, the company announced that it planned to open 10 new stores in 2022 and stock more used vehicles than new.
