Better World Books was founded in 2001 by three college friends, Christopher Fuchs, Jeff Kurtzman, and Xavier Helgesen. After selling their used textbooks online, they had an idea for their own online site, where people could freely buy and sell both new and used books of all kinds. The company is for profit, but makes generous donations to various literacy programs around the world.

The company’s first book drive, in which 2,000 books were bought and sold, raised $20,000. Half of this money was donated to the Robinson Community Learning Center in Indiana. The company donates one book to Feed the Children, Books for Africa, or other organizations for every book sold on their website. Free shipping is standard for all orders, including international orders.

Better World Books opened an operation in Scotland in 2008, and an online site in the UK in 2010.  The company had $65 million in revenue in 2015 and has approximately 350 full time employees.
