Columbia Sportswear began as Columbia Hats in 1937 by Paul and Marie Lamfrom. The couple fled Nazi Germany and purchased a hat distributing company. After being frustrated by production problems, the company began making their own hats and sportswear in 1960.

Today, Columbia Sportswear is one of the largest sellers of ski apparel and jackets in the US. The company went public on the NASDAQ in 1998 and can be found under the ticker symbol: COLM. As of late 2015, the company reported that there were 100 locations around the US, with thousands of other sporting good stores carrying their products. Along with 5,300 employees, the company reported annual revenue in 2014 of $2.1 billion.

Schuler Books & Music Corporate Office

Schuler Books and Music, originally called Schuler Books, was founded in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1982, by current owners Bill and Cecile Fehsenfeld. The couple loved books and decided to make it their life’s career. The original store sold only new books and magazines. Today, the company sells new, used, and digital books, as well as used books and music.

The company operates a chain of 3 book and music stores in the state of Michigan. Food and coffee were introduced in 1995. The company also prints books via books on demand through their Espresso Book Machine. This machine can print and bind a book in minutes. This allows clients to obtain books that are currently out of stock or even out of print books.

Schuler Books and Music acquired Nicola’s Bookstore, located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 2014, but has not changed the name and, at this time, it is unclear if they will.

Proto Tools, originally called Plomb Tools, was founded in 1907 by Alphonse Plomb and Charles Williams in Los Angeles, California. Originally working as a blacksmith, the company is accredited with creating the first combination wrench in 1933.  The company makes and distributes hand tools.

The company has acquired numerous other tool manufacturing companies over the years, including Cragin Tool, P&C Tool, and J.P. Danielson. In 1946, the company was sued for copyright infringement by another tool manufacturer, J.R. Plumb. The company decided to change the name to “Proto”.

Today, Proto Tools is owned by Stanley Black & Decker, who acquired the company in 1984.

After a few years, business improved substantially, so Barnes moved to an office in Chicago, selling new and used books, as well as stationery items. Barnes sold the company in 1917 and later founded what is known today as Barnes and Noble bookstores.

The company was sold to C.W. Follett in 1918 and he renamed it Follett Publishing Company. Today, Follett provides educational technology, textbooks, and digital content to many schools in the US, for kindergartners through high school, as well as material for public libraries. The company is focusing on text rentals, eCommerce, and digital materials.

What began as a home business has grown into a $2.7 billion, privately owned company which provides more than 5 million students with the materials they need for their education. The company employs more than 18,000 people in the US, Canada, and other countries.

In 2016, the company acquired online book seller Valore for an undisclosed amount.

One Meineke franchisor in Delaware offered free oil changes to Veterans in 2019 and gave away more than 260 free oil changes. 

In April 2013, Meineke Car Care Centers, Inc. announced the acquisition of the Seattle-Tacoma auto repair chain, Walt’s Auto Care Centers, or “Walt’s”.

In June 2014, Meineke acquired eight America’s Service Station locations in the Atlanta area.
