Melissa Livingston founded Twisted Wares (AKA Missy Well Made, Inc.) in McKinney, Texas, after losing everything in the recession of 2008. She left Seattle to move in with family members. Melissa had fun creating her own tea towels and kitchen towels but she began making them in earnest to sell on Etsy to make some money.

Twisted Ware towel Livingston knew she had to make something different than plain old embroidered hand towels, and after her toddler son had pulled down her kitchen towel off the oven door handle for the umpteenth time, Livingston created the “Hang Tight Towel.” This simple design uses a strip of elasticized cloth to hold the towel in place.

Livingston is also fond of slightly naughty sayings that she adorns her towels with. The business began to thrive. The company expanded their product line to include aprons, napkins, house banners, decorative pillows, potholders, and t-shirts.

Fab Corporate Office

Fab.com logo

Fab was founded in 2010 by Jason Goldberg and Brad Shellhammer. Originally begun as an online social site for gay men, the founders decided to turn to sell design items, art, and flash sales on household decorative items.

By November of 2012, the site had 1 million clients, growing faster than Facebook or Twitter. By December, they had 10 million members and was averaging 5.4 sales per minute.

Fab Fab promoted social commerce, where members could upload and share design ideas. The company designed and released a mobile app in October 2012.

Once estimated to have a value of $1 billion, today it is rumored that Fab was sold for $15 million to PCH International in late 2015. The original founders stepped down and the company relaunched its website, with no mention of the former owners. Two-thirds of employees were dismissed.

The reason for Fab’s failure appears to be that the company was simply unable to find a business model and flash sales, once a hot item with consumers in the 2009-2010 years, have gone cold. The company also tried to expand into Europe without proper planning, according to experts.

At this time, company headquarters remain in New York City. It is unknown if PCH will move operations at a later date. Fab Offices

Best market Logo

Best Market, also known as Best Yet Market, was founded in New York by the Raitses family in 1994. The company’s focus is on fresh produce and meats, but they also offer other types of groceries, including the family label BBQ sauce and local craft beer.

In 2002, the company changed its name to Best Yet Markets, but some older stores are still labeled with the old signage.

The company began as a corner fruit and vegetable stand but quickly moved into larger quarters. Today, Best Market has 30 stores in New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut. A flagship store was opened in Harlem, New York, in 2010. Best Market Storefront

Beginning in 2015, the company began expanding through acquisitions, usually taking over A&P locations. Many of the newer locations are going green, getting their electricity from rooftop solar panels, an all-hybrid vehicle fleet and electric charging stations for employees and customers.

Best Yet Market Storefront  The company announced that it would soon move headquarters from Bethpage, New York, to Bay Shore, Long Island, as part of a tax incentive, although a move date has yet to be announced.

Currently, the company employs approximately 3,000 employees and has headquarters in Bethpage, New York.
