Larry Hansel was only 20 years old, but he already had a thriving car detailing business. What he really dreamed of doing, however, was to sell cutting edge fashion while taking a road trip at the same time.

Hansel achieved at least part of his dream, however, selling his clothing line, which he named Rampage.

In 2005, Hansel sold his business to the Iconix Group for a cool $45.9 million. Iconix also entered into a contract to continue to sell the sportswear collection Larry Hansel, LLC.

Rampage clothing is sold at upscale department stores around the globe, with more than a dozen companies being issued licenses to sell the popular clothing brand.

In December 2019, Savannah Chrisley announced that she was launching a second clothing line, featuring Rampage clothing and accessories.

Orv Madden, former executive of The Children’s Place, began selling T-shirts and assorted novelty items out of his garage in 1988. He opened his first retail location in 1989 in the Montclair Plaza, in Montclair, California. The company operates a chain of counterculture stores, usually located in shopping malls. The stores offer clothing, accessories, and licensed music.

At least 40% of Hot Topic’s sales come from rock band T-shirts. The company negotiates exclusive licensing arrangements with singers and bands, movie studios, and graphic artists.

Nine West was founded in 1983 in New York, New York, by Jerome Fisher & Vince Camuto. The first store location was located in Stamford, Connecticut. Originally, the store sold only women’s shoes. Since that time, the company has expanded tremendously, offering handbags, sunglasses, legwear, outerwear, jewelry, belts, watches, cold weather accessories, hats, scarves and wraps, and eyewear. After the launch of handbags in 1995, Nine West expanded to dresses, suits and children’s shoes.

The company went international in 1994, opening its first overseas location in Hong Kong. In 1995, Nine West acquired the United States Shoe Corporation, which included the Easy Spirit brand of shoes.

Nine West once had 800 global locations in 57 countries, as well as an active e-commerce site.

In April 2018, it was announced that Nine West’s U.S. business had filed for bankruptcy and closed all its stores. It was announced that Nine West’s business would be closed for good. It was also announced that the Nine West brand would be acquired by Authentic Brands Group.

Authentic Brands reopened many store locations and announced in 2019 that Tyra Banks would be their new ambassador and spokesperson.

Actor Robert Redford purchased a 6,000-acre ranch in Utah in 1969 after making the movie “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” in which Redford played the Sundance Kid. The ranch was named Sundance and Redford created the Sundance Group, which is a non-profit organization.

Sundance Ranch offers a small resort and “town”, which features local artists and artesian products. The store became very popular and Redford began selling these items via the Sundance Catalog, which was first published in 1989. Mr. Redford once quipped, “Let me say that if for any reason this Catalog should fail, I plan to change my name and move to Bolivia.”

The catalog is published several times each year and has a separate catalog for jewelry. There are also Sundance retail stores and outlets, with 18 locations in as many states.

Nautica Corporate Office

David Chu and his family immigrated from Taiwan in the early 1960s. Chu attended the New York Fashion Institute and began to design men’s coats that resembled old fashioned sailor suits. The coats were instant hits in the upscale New York men’s clothing stores. Chu named his company Nautica, which is an offshoot of the Latin word “Nauticus”, which means ship.

Today, the company sells a variety of men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing, watches, shoes, perfume, towels, linen, and more. Nautica has 170 stores around the world and the brand is sold in a variety of retail locations.

Nautica is generally priced between mid-range brands and premium designer brands, making it a popular choice for those seeking quality but aren’t necessarily interested in big-name brands.
