Bealls Florida, often simply called Bealls, was founded in 1915 in Bradenton, Florida, by Robert Beall. Beall used his entire life savings to purchase merchandise and rent a store. He had no money for display cases so he used the packing crates his merchandise had come in. The original name of the store was “The Dollar Limit” as nothing in the store cost more than $1. Bealls might be the original dollar store. The name was changed in the 1950’s.

Today, Bealls has more than 500 locations throughout Florida, as well as outlet stores in several states and online shopping. Today, Lane Bryant has more than 800 locations in 46 states. The company also sells online and via mail order catalogs. The company specializes in larger women’s sizes from 14 to 28. Lane Bryant topped $1 billion in sales in 2014.
