Carter’s was founded in 1865 by William Carter in Needham, Massachusetts.  The company was originally called the William Carter Company.  Their first product was hand knitted mittens.

In the 1870s, adult underwear and union suits were added to the product line.

In the 1950s, the company shifted from adult clothing to children’s clothing.

In 2001, the company created the Just One You brand.  This brand focuses on clothing, bedding and decor for infants.

In 2003, the company launched the Child of Mine brand specifically for Walmart.

In 2005, the company acquired OshKosh B’gosh.

In 2010, the company launched the Precious Firsts line for newborns and infants.  This line is exclusive to Target.

Today, the company operates over 750 Carter’s and OshKosh B’gosh retail locations.  They sell infant and chilren’s clothing under 6 brands.

In January 2020, Carter’s received a great deal of criticism after a passerby noticed a trash bin filled with new clothing and shoes that had been slashed or cut. The company revealed that these were seasonal items that were unsold. The Facebook post showing the items has gone viral, with complaints to the company being that this only adds to the landfills and that this clothing could have been donated.

Headquarters for Carter’s are located in Atlanta, Georgia.

I work at the carters store in Central Park Ave. I don’t like how my manger has been treating us as a team. She has a favorite and its know for who it is . she makes people not want to work and change our hours. You can be confused not knowing what to do while asking a simple question she’ll give you an attitude while making you feel stupid. If you call out even on time she’ll ask why as if its not personal then be sarcastic while giving attitude. I like the job but working with her made me realize I don’t want to be at a store who doesn’t make me feel like we’re a team. She’ll be the first to call others out behind their back but if she does it it’ll be like nothing.

Hello, I am writing from Toronto, Canada.
There is a recent post on Facebook from someone who found multiple bags in the garbage which were full of BRAND NEW clothes, shoes and other things from the nearby Carter’s store in the Dufferin Mall. All of these items had been systematically destroyed before they were put into the garbage so that no-one else could use them if they were found. The Facebook post was accompanied by photos showing the garbage bags and their destroyed contents. I am absolutely appalled that any retailer would just dump unsold or returned items into the garbage instead of either recycling them, or better yet, donate them or put them to good use by people who are desperate for clothing. So I have two questions which I would like answered:-
    a) Is this your corporate policy to destroy and dump unsellable or returned items into the garbage?
b} If it is your policy, shame on you, and what are you going to do to change this disgraceful state of affairs?
A prompt reply would be appreciated.

I work for Carter’s. We do donate to local places in need. A lot of that stuff that’s thrown away would be things that are damaged that couldn’t be repaired or cleaned. Therefore, we destroy it so no one can find it and try to return it. You’d be amazed by how much we donate, though.

When I called 8 hours before my shift started I even looked for another associate to cover my shift to save them the time of having to look for somebody last minute . Other associate call in and do the same I did of looking for someone to cover the shift and they don’t get told nothing .. I got marked as a no show and I called in .. & I honestly would really like if you guys could email HR’s number . Becuase I feel Like I’m being treated unequally by the store manager

I love Carter’s! I’ve worked for them for almost 3 years. After that I became a stay home mom then I went back to work for Carter’s by that time it was craters and Oshkosh. One day the supervisor Devon from Kansas city, Kansas Shawnee store. That day I had gotten a phone call from my daughter. It was an emergency! So, I picked up my phone and stepped away from customers. He yells at me in front of customers and and tells me “i don’t care who you were talking too”.. He could have took me to the side and spoken to me professional. Instead he decided to yell at me in front of customers! I wish craters the best if there going to keep him as a supervisor!

Hello work for a new store in nc and I’m very appalled how an assistant manager tia can even be a manager at all. Instead of leading she treated me like a door mat and made faces about me when she turned around. I saw it. I worked in the retail business for a very long time and I don’t think she understands customer service. I can’t work around negative people like this. I’ve seen how she is around others and it looks like she has formed a clique already. She thinks because she is higher she thinks she has higher authority to do this. That’s not how u treat associates. You want to work with them not against them. They say 1st impressions are everything and it’s very true my first one with her wasn’t pleasant. I won’t be there very long.

    To whom may it concern,
    Hi my kaylah williams
I started working at the oshkosh store at ann andurel mills mall on 11/20/16 and the mangement there sucks. So i am leaving my position as a cashier at your store, my last day will be 1/18/17 the reason why i am leaving is because of poor management. it is poor management
because when i am working the manger at the store Regina, she has an attitude and very impatient she acts like does not care about anything or anyone. There has been a couple of times where she has me working 6 hours and i don’t get my 30 or 15min then she will tell me if i work 6 hours i don’t get a lunch break only if I work 7 hours or more and then when I was working there she was only giving me 4 to 5 hours a week, and sometimes i don’t get a break at all no matter how many hours i have worked, I was not trained very well by her either she was not very patient with me she wanted me to learn everything in 5 mins and i don’t think that is not alot of time to train some one and i only got one training day. Overall, My experience working there was horrible.

As a mother of four I shop Carter’s and Oshkosh frequently. I do love the brand and quality. However, with that being said the customer service is the worst I’ve experienced in retail. And as we all know, customer service can go along way. Having two bad customer service experiences in one week has really made me reconsider purchasing any of the six brands from your corporation in the future. I come from a large family there lots of kids and grandkids and my family and I will definitely share my experiences with all including social media. I won’t going to detail here on exactly what happened with two of my separate orders. But if you’re interested in hearing the story feel free to contact me at the email address provided.

As a mother of 5 sons and now a grandmother and great grandmother,I have to say I am very disappointed in your baby sleepers, child of mine! Who makes these sleepers? The arms, especially the hands are so hard to get on a baby because the openings are so small, I had to stretch and stretch the arms and wrist openings, she is 9 months old and normal weight your quality of clothing has gone downhill! I don’t know if you care or not but you have lost a customer of 38 yrs! Everything is being made overseas and they have no idea what they are doing , please improve the quality of your clothing, very very sad

I’ve worked at carters for over 18 months. It’s my job, my way to make a living. I love working here and I’m willing to work as much as needed because I need to. But the policy is that you have to be manager to be full time. I got a promotion but it’s still not full time and less than 20 hours a week is not cutting it. My boss is amazing but she keeps getting in trouble for giving me hours. It’s terrible that people that want to work can’t get hours because of your policies. I actually planned on staying here for longer but now I can’t because I’m not getting enough hours.

I have been an employee at store 736 in Wrentham, MA for almost 4 years now. During that time I welcomed my second child a girl. My daughter was born with a serious health condition that often times lands us in the emergency room. While I respect the company and everything it represents and its been my joy to bring happiness to the customers, I find the company attendance policy a little ridiculous. I am a single mother of two children with carters being my only source of income. I get reminded by my managers of the policy regarding calling out constantly and yes while I understand the reasons behind it, for single moms like myself and so many other employees in your stores our children come first. I find it appalling that if I have to call out because one or both of my kids is sick that I face getting written up when the young teens and college students don’t get reprimanded for calling in “sick” while posting on facebook and other social media outlets that they are out with their friends drinking, at the beach etc. Why don’t they face those same consequences? They need only to care for themselves, not like myself when I have two small children that rely on me and only me to care for them. For a company that prides itself on children and embracing them carters sure doesn’t seem to care if something happens to the children of their employees.

    With regards,
    A.M. Stewart

    Concerning: Katelyn Wynn

I apologize, I failed to advise you again today she called to see if she was needed at work. I guess a different manager (I believe her name is Crystal) was on duty and said she was scheduled.

I did not allow her to go in as an employer should not allow their employees to be treated this was.

She no longer is employed with your establishment.

    To Whom it May Concern,

My daughter Katelyn Wynn was hired at your NC. Concord Mills store as a seasonal employee. She is 17 years old and needed extra money for the holidays. She stopped looking for employment once she was hired at the above location.
She has been employed over a month maybe even two. She has worked maybe 5 days total and has been put on call every weekend and a few days during the week. Therefore she has been unable to make plans to do anything. The so called trainer gives her a hard time stating she was told how to do something. Well if you only work 2 days then are not worked for 2 weeks what does she expect???? Horrible management..
Regardless, have the managers get familiar with the Seasonal / part time section of Labor Laws and see if they feel they are in compliance.

This is not my only issue, She also was never given a paycheck. Now, almost two months later, she had to go and ask to get paid. Again, poor management.

Please contact me to discuss the above.

    Sincerely,

    Christine Friedman

I purchased ( or so I was notified by the website) a pair of high top sparkle sneakers on labor day sale, which would give me 50 % off and an additional 25% off total purchase for my daughter. Needless to say, I bought more stuff to reach the total required minimum to get the discount. Later, I was notified that my order is partially canceled as the high tops are out of stock, mind you that was after the order was placed and I received a confirmation on the purchase. I was understanding however and tried to resolve the issue through the email option by asking to match the labor day discount deal on shoes that were available, but was told by an associate that Carters is not able to provide me with a matching discount on a comparable pair of shoes I requested instead of the ones that were out of stock. The whole situation looks like a bait and switch now. I was lead to believe I am getting a great deal on a pair of shoes on labor day sale, but instead got several filler items in order to reach the minimum amount eligible for additional discount and no deal on the shoes my daughter actually needed. And the fact that Carters would not offer me the same deal on the shoes that are available is outrageous. I have never experienced this with another company and as a mother and a networking professional would be very honest with my friends about the experience I’ve encountered with all of my friends. Just in case you care to look in to this issue, my canceled order number is CAR08809012. The associates I have communicated with were Ashley, Melissa and Rashiya. Thank you, Lilyana.

Hi there, I was in your So.Windsor, CT store today, August 15, 2014. I look for good prices and quality clothing for my two and a half year old identical twin granddaughters. There was a special on leggings and tops. The tops were $5 and $6 for long sleeves and the leggings were $5. I bought them each a pair of pajamas, 2short sleeve tops and 2leggings. The sales girl said the tops were $6 and I begged to differ with her. Another salesclerk said the tops were 3/4 sleeves and clearly they were not that either. I tried to prove my point that long is long, 3/4 is 3/4, and short is short. Now they both agree with me but said that the manufacture sticker on the front of the jersey reads long sleeve. The shirts in question read, pw-op separates t-shirt f14 253b484 s. The sku is 8 88510 07021 4 Which aren’t long sleeve. I would like you to evaluate these shirts please and let me know what you think. I am sure as I am I sitting here that these ARE short sleeve jerseys (t-shirts). Two dollars is not going to make me or break me, it is the principle. The issue is the label that prices these jerseys are clearly incorrect. Thank you for your time and I am looking forward to hearing from you.
    Thanks again

      Hi Kathleen,
Glad you chose Carter’s when looking for quality and valued prices.
I am displeased to hear you did not quite find the quality you came in for. The 3\4 sleeve Jersey tee you purchased seems like it may be a part of the fall/spring collection. Being as it is only 1/4 away from the full arm length, it IS considered a long sleeve. Make sure to account for the size of the unit bought, to the appropriate sizing needed. You have two prescious growing grand babies, what fits on Monday doesn’t always fit on Sunday. *The clothing is based on an average height, width and length.–THIS COMMENTARY IS MY PERSONAL BASED OPINION, NOT AFFILIATED WITH THAT OF THE WILLIAM CARTER INDUSTRY.

In January, I visited and purchased items at a Carter’s store at The Shops at Park Lane in Dallas, TX. The staff there was courteous and followed protocol to a “T”. That being said, I needed extra assistance and the supervisor in that store was unable to accommodate my request. I reached out via phone to another Carter’s store (in Allen, TX) and was assisted by the supervisor, Heather Marsh. She listened to my dilemma and contacted the Park Lane store; advising the supervisor there on how to help me with my unique situation. She went above and beyond and was extremely knowledgeable, professional and compassionate. I think it appropriate for her to receive extra recognition for helping someone in such an unusual cirXXXXstance- especially since it wasn’t even at the store she was in. As a hiring manager in the professional world, her skills and service spoke volumes to me.

**Please note: the representatives at the Park Lane store were also friendly and assisted me in a professional manner. They were able to complete my request with the assistance of Heather.

Hello I am an employee at Carter’s/Osh Kosh a new side by side store, located in Plymouth Meeting Mall. I’m writing because this is the second time that we have not recieved our paychecks. The first time was a week before Christmas which was the biggest inconveince ever and the second time is today,
1/31/2014. The week before Christmas no one knew what had happened to the paychecks. This weeks excuse is that there was a delay in Georgia because of a snow storm from a week ago. They are saying that the paychecks wont be available untill tomorrow Sat 2/1/2014 in the evening. I am really upset because I like my job, and its not fair that because I don’t have direct deposit that I don’t get paid on time like everyone else. I’m telling you now that I am currently looking for a new position because I plan on leaving your company, because I have 5 children and bills to pay. What do I tell the bill collectors, Oh I’m sorry my check was lost, or my check was delayed due to a snow storm. What do I tell my Children when they want to eat, Wait till tomorrow evening kids. This is unacceptable and I have had it. The store hasn’t even been open that long, this is bad business. And I really hope to get a response, let’s see how much Corporate cares about the little people. I mean we are only the people who are making you guys money, I wanns see who cares.

I am one of your employees at your sawgrass Carter’s location I believe is store 575. I’m writing because I feel as if I was treated unfairly. I was brought to an off site public storage where I worked my scheduled time and was told that I had to stay extra time. I explained that I got two hours of sleep and had no interest in staying late (although I have many times). They then refused to bring me back and told me consider my shifts gone for the remainder of my work week. I had to walk about three or four miles to get back to the store on foot In the sun with my belongings and money in my work locker. I try my best to be a team player but I feel as if that shows a lack of concern for my schedule outside of work. I was exhausted before I even got to my second job that I’m at till two. I feel like that experience makes me think hard about my future with Carter’s.

I would like to comment on your store in Fredericton New Brunswick Canada (Carters and Oshkosh) The entire shopping experience in this store is positive. We buy alot of clothing for our Grandchildren there and have nothing but good things to say. The store is bright, clean and extremely organized. the staff are friendly and extremely helpful. The quality and pricing of the clothing is great. Everyone in the people industry should have a pat on the back when they go over and above and your employees in this store really do. They make your shopping very positive.
