Brookstone was founded in 1965 by Pierre de Beaumont and his wife Mary, after the pair took some basic accounting classes via mail. They made a catalog of items for hobbyists and mailed them to people in their state. Mr. de Beaumont was well known for creating his own handy “tools” or shortcut items, which he soon featured for sale in his catalog. The company is named after their farm.
Today, Brookstone is a chain of 300 retail stores across the US, usually found in airports and shopping malls. The first brick and mortar location was opened in 1973. The company is known for toys and unique items such as massage chairs, pillows with embedded speakers, and iPhone accessories. Brookstone is unique in that customers can try out any item in the store before purchasing.
Brookstone filed for bankruptcy in early 2014 and was acquired by Sailing Capital and Sun Power Corporation in June of 20144. Stores and online services remained open and the company is back in the black.

I find it ironic that under your own company info, it states “From the start Brookstone created a fun, interactive shopping experience. At our stores customers are encouraged to try products out for true, hands-on shopping. Every visit to Brookstone is an opportunity to discover new and ingenious items of superior quality-all in a friendly environment of Customer Care and integrity that simply can’t be found anywhere else” when, on 9/1/2017 between about 8-9PM manager Jill had the worst attitude I have seen in a retail employee. My boyfriend, his brother, and I were walking around the Menlo Park Mall location (108). My boyfriend decided to look into some massage items that your store supplies. Eventually he noticed massage chairs, and sat down in one to get a feel for it. That is when Jill came over and decided that we were not good enough to look at her massage chairs. She made my boyfriend get up from the seat, saying that we “cannot afford this chair” and we should take a look at the price tag. I find her comment somewhat amusing because although my boyfriend looks young, he is a real adult with a real job and could afford multiples of this massage chair. When my boyfriend calmly told her that he actually could purchase the chair, she replied with even more sarcasm and told us that “only people who are serious receive a proper demo”. As we were leaving the store Jill decided to make one last comment, this time to me, saying that I “must enjoy hanging around those two” as if the boys were the problem. I am severely disgusted after this experience with Brookstone as I expected better. On top of it all she mentioned that she is the manager so I can only imagine how far her attitude and discrimination will affect making future sales.

I am a former employee, I quit. I wasn’t written up nor was I in any kind of trouble, I quit working at the Salt Lake airport Carry On because of the shady dealings going there. The manager and assistant manager both displayed dangerous business practices contrary to Brookstones policies and counter to TSA safety procedures which included holding onto to customers old bags and shipping their old bags back to them. There where bags that sat in the back room for months at a time, they also showed a high disregard to people of color and sexual orientation and in this day and age I found this to be very distasteful and disgusting. Shame on this company.

I am veryyyy upset.!! I placed an order on 12/17/16. Gave my information to a guy that couldn’t speak English to well. I received information on my order and where it was to be shipped was all wrong , so I called back and they told me it would be corrected . It NEVER arrived to my grandson!!!! So I finally got ahold of someone. They told me it went twice to the wrong apartment. SO IT DID NOT GET CHANGED. and I would receive a refund. STILL WAITING !!!! :O:O

Hello,
If you truly love to “surprise and delight customers” maybe you can help me. That hasn’t been my experience with Brookstone on a recent purchase. I purchased a very expensive Shiatsu neck massager from you about a month ago.. Somehow the A/c power charger chord got lost (my problem not yours). BUT when I called the local Thousand Oaks store, I was told “don’t have one to sell you, try e-bay.” Not to be deterred, I contacted your national Customer Service Department and was told by Anye in a rather abrupt way, “none in inventory call, call back in a MONTH.” This is not the customer support and service that will keep me buying products from Brookstone!
Please help me. I have pretty serious neck problems from cancer and I need a working unit. I am hopeful that you will support your products more sincerely than my recent experience. I don’t want anything free, but it seems that you would supppy necessary parts for purchase. Pleas help me.

To whom it may concern,
My name is Salme Rizvi and I recently visited the Brookstone store at Woodfield Mall located in Schaumburg, Illinois on August 3rd, 2016. I went to this store to look at some of the massage chairs they offered on display to try out. I went in, spoke to the female employee working. She told me to take off my shoes and showed me how to turn it on, use the settings, and how it would turn off by itself. I had been in the chair for about 4 to 5 minutes at most when all of a sudden an employee by the name of Justin harshly came up to me exclaiming that I was getting “too comfortable” and that my time was up. He very rudely told me that I had to get out of the chair. When I came into the store there were a couple of other White people who had been using the chair before I came into the store and were still using it and he did not tell them to leave yet. I asked him how come he did not ask them to leave and he said that he would except he wanted to tell me to leave first. I had even left the store for a long period of time and had come back and those other people were still there! I was infuriated with how rudely he was speaking and treating me. For some reason he was targeting me and showing much aversion towards me in particular. I spoke to the other female employee that was working that day, which whom I forgot the name of but she was very sweet and helpful. I asked her why he was treating me this way, was it just because I am a Muslim and because I was wearing a scarf on my head? What right does he have to discriminate against me for using a chair for less than 5 minutes, when the other white family had been on for an extended period of time, unbothered? I have been a loyal customer to Brookstone for many years. I shop here for almost every birthday, anniversary, both father’s and mother’s day. I have always been treated with the utmost respect and have valued all the products. That is until this horrible experience. It is 2016 and unfortunately it is evident that discrimination and racism is very much so alive today, I just am so shocked and disappointed that it has shown up in one of my favorite stores. The employee by the name of Justin has disrespected me greatly and something must be done about this and refused to apologize to me. I must say that it does not matter how many times I have come here, or how many products I have gotten, but as of now Brookstone has permanently lost a customer.
Sincerely,
Salme Rizvi
