Brake Masters was founded in Phoenix, Arizona, by brothers Eric and Shalom Laytin in 1982. Originally named Auto Brakes, this pair of immigrants from Israel changed the name the following year to Brake Masters. In 1984, the brothers opened a second location.
A third location was opened in 1989. Franchising followed in 1994.
Today, the company has 89 stores in Arizona, Texas, California, Nevada, and New Mexico. The company specializes in brake repair and replacements but also performs other types of auto repair and maintenance, such as oil changes, front-end alignments, clutches, and batteries. The company only employs ASE-certified technicians, unlike many auto repair shops.
Brake Masters has partnered with Valvoline, Bendix, and Monroe.
In May 2023, Brake Masters opened a new location in Gilbert, Arizona.
Brake Masters currently has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.
Although there have been complaints to the BBB, CEO Eric Laytin states that those problems were promptly addressed. Headquarters are located in Tucson, Arizona.

I took my 1997 Ford F-250 truck to the Brake Masters #147 located at 5180 W. Peoria, Glendale, AZ 85302, on February 17, 2023, because the back brakes were smoking. It took about a week for them to make the repairs due to the part not being available. I picked up the truck on February 23, 2023, and was over charged for the labor in the amount of $192.00. I was able to finance the majority of the amount through EasyPay and paid $904.68 by debt Visa card. I was told by the manager at the store several times that he is not able to refund me the amount of $192.00 and that they submitted a request to the Corporate Office for reimbursement numerous times. As of today, May 16, 2023, we still have not received payment. I have gone to Brake Masters in person several times and have been getting the run around. The manager keeps saying it’s Corporate’s fault. At this point, we don’t care where the fault lies, we are requesting to be reimbursed immediately as this has gotten ridiculous. This is a large company, and you are going to tell me that they are not able to add the funds electronically back to the debit card? I am requesting Corporate to rectify this situation immediately. Please contact me at 1-719-429-XXXX so that we can get this issue resolved. Thank you.

On 2/6/2023 I went to break masters in Bernalillo N.M. for an oil change. I had a coupon. for $26.99. The day before I called the shop and spoke to the manager Gabriel Maes and was informed that my oil change would work with that coupon. It took 1hr. And 50min for a simple oil change and I was charged $46.95, the coupon wasn’t applied. When I asked Gabriel why it was taking so long he became very mean and kept scowling at me. ( I was afraid of him because I was alone in the store.) I can’t believe that he would treat a senior female like that unless he treats all women like that. What they did to me was bait and switch that’s illegal. I am so very upset and I will be telling everyone I know about my treatment even men won’t want the females in there family treated that way. They will not be any business from anyone I know.

I was satisfied with the old management at store#148 in Scottsdale az but not at all with the new manager Richard. He did not use my coupons, was very short and curt with me, double talked me, did no show me a paid final bill. I was very satisfied with the old manager but not the new one , Richard. I will not have my cars serviced at Brake masters again! There was no explanation of the work done.

I had the same issue with this guy (Richard Yan)…I am actually going to contact corporate about him because he doesn’t belong in customer service and definitely shouldn’t be a manager.

Brakes went out on my car right after diagnostic work was done by brake master in roseville, manager threatened and tried intimidating me when i tried to reason with him. Very unhappy customer. I will be contacting fair trade commission, BBB, and the bureau of automotive repair, as well as starting a case in civil court. I wouldn’t ever want to see someone get taken advantage of like this. i’m also glad nobody was injured or killed! seems like you guys sugar coat things and ignore the people with questionable concerns. this place is running a scam.

DO NOT USE BRAKE MASTERS!!!!
I had a flat that could not be repaired, so I needed to replace both front tires. I was about to get new front tires for my 2015 Genesis but decided to have the car aligned before doing so. Brake Masters did the alignment ($70). Then I took the car next door to the tire shop for new front tires ($550). After the tires were installed there was a noticeable pull to the right. I complained to the tire shop who told me to have the alignment checked. I took it back to Brake Master who checked the alignment as was told it was perfect and it must be a tire pull. Back at the tire shop, swapped left and right side tires to see if pull would follow (indicating a flawed tire), it did not. The tire shop replace both front tires again with same brand. Problem did not go away so I chocked it up to just my own stupidity in buying the wrong tire brand. Some month later, I began to notice a “wah wah” sound coming from the front tires. I took it back to the tire shop where they told me the tires were showing cupping from poor alignment or bad suspension. Knowing that the alignment has been performed and checked TWICE at Brake Masters, I took the car to Hyundai dealership to have suspension looked at. They found no problems with suspension so checked the alignment which was way OUT OF ALIGNMENT. They said the car had been ALIGNED FOR THE WRONG MODEL. Paid $140 for a proper alignment and now have to get new tires again ($550). When I left Hyundai the pull to the right was gone. I called Pete at Brake Master who told me “we would have aligned it again for free”. GREAT! They expect me to trust their alignment?? In my opinion they should have refunded the $70 they charged me to F-up my car PLUS a set of tires that were ruined due to their incompetence.
Total cost to me:
Two alignments $200 (a bad one and one to correct it)
Two set of tires $1,100 (one set ruined by bad alignment and now a new set to replace.

Took my vehicle in to get my brakes and pads replaced. The following day while driving to work, as I went to make my exit my brakes gave out! My only choice was to either rear end into a semi truck or sway to the right and hit another car to try and get my vehicle to stop. After hitting the other vehicle my car still ended up in front of the driver that I hit. I have been trying to deal with Brake Masters letting them know that they need to make this right as my life was at stake. I have been given so many excuses and still am waiting for a call back from the corporate office on how they would like to proceed and do what is right. I will continue to move forward with this situation and will do whatever is needed to get this resolved.

Can’t believe this company is in business, I had an oil change appointment at 10:00 a.m. I showed up at 9:45 a.m. – – – I’ll cut the fat off, at 11:00 they hadn’t started on my car – – I walked out at 11:04 – – they asked me if I wanted to reschedule – – I said are you serious?
I tried to call the Corp. office – – my call went to voice mail.

A lawsuit has been started against store #204 in Oro Valley AZ For faulty workmanship, endangerment to life & property, failure to comply with the written refund letter given to us by the store manager (Adam Stadnik) another store manager or acting manager lied to us and said that Adam Stadnik had been fired along with the mechanic who did the brake job which was untrue.

Never take your car to a Brake masters in any city or any state!!!!! as long as they are dishonest at the very top the company as a whole can’t be trusted. They have mechanics that shouldn’t be sweeping the shop floor much less working on your vehicle.
Travis Watts says
Chaz with Brake Masters is a Fraud and a scam artist. They make you promises and then come up with excuses as to why they can’t keep them.

I got a call from manager rich which was a divk to me sounded like he wanted to rush me to parts etc i cried i talked to friends then i got all parts needed. I got a call from Richard now the clutch was defected I am like really called O’Reilly’s they ordered a new clutch I told Richard he said he called another O’Reillys on bell I said why I bought in a different store at ehe same time I called Carquest where I bought the flywheel talked to Al he disclosed info to me that break masters buys parts from them so Richard was not happy with that cause got caught where he gets cheaper and charge a fortune. Now he is to fix car with 2nd clutch calls me and said the transmission is wrong etc etc I said no my car transmission was fine cause my car drive just fine he sa it d was bent I said bent I never had an accident I barely drive my car. I called a professional which told almost 100 % they dropped my transmission and wants to blame me or make more $ . I am not paying more $ I want car fixed or I am going to get an attorney. I already called TV channel 3 on my side to help me and BBB. Now I want a call to get this resolved. It’s the shop responsibility for the care of my car and liability.

I had my oil changed today at store#196. I took the time to print a coupon for 19.95. I ended up paying 32.92. I called and questioned it, I didn’t feel like my coupon was applied. My thoughts were to budget 25.00 for an oil change, that didn’t happen. I will NOT continue to take my car for service or recommended anyone. I would appreciate a reimbursement or at least an explanation.
Sincerely,
Theresa Lovato
