84 Lumber History

84 Lumber was founded by Joe Hardy in 1956. The name comes from the town called Eighty Four, in Pennsylvania, where the company maintains their headquarters.

Today, the company has more than 250 locations in 30 states. Plans for expanding the business have been made, but exactly where new locations would be placed has not been made public. In addition to lumber, the company also carries doors, gardening supplies, and garage doors. Installation centers are available at almost every location. The company was hit hard by the recession in 2008. From a maximum of 400 locations, owners closed half of their stores, as well as limiting family spending and laying off employees. The company survived without filing bankruptcy. In 2015, the company posted annual revenue of $2.5 billion.

84 Lumber is still owned and operated by the Hardy family. Headquarters, as well, remain in Eighty Four, Pennsylvania.

FYI, You have a serious in house problem at your Lenexa, KS store. I use to be able to easily purchase cull lumber package there at a fair price with no problem. For more than 2 years now there appears to be an in-house mafia controlling all such sales. I have been told there is a single employee that buys all cull lumber, however, no one will identify the employee nor can customers arrange to purchase from the store or the employee any cull lumber. On several visits to the store no management personnel would meet with me to discuss the situation or identify the employee who is buying all returned cull lumber items. The atmosphere certainly breeds a sense of wrong doing and raises suspicion that more than what is said is going on with the apparent knowledge of management. Having been criminal investigator and state trooper I know when I have been lied to and when someone is concealing facts. I have no doubt there is some irregularities occurring which may very well be costing your corporation a sizable amount of money due to the actions of employees at this store. You are now aware of it, it is now for you to either act on the information or condone it.

When are you going to get the web site fixed so contractors can go in to view invoices and to pay invoices. Been waiting for several several weeks and getting impatient and disgusted.

I ordered 8 doors from you guys. I was told they would take a week and half to come in, that was false it took two and a half weeks. If I thought for a second it would have taken longer I would not have place the order. So I came in to pick up my doors and was told only 5 doors were here and that it would take another 7 days for the rest, pissed of course I said, “ok”. Went in today to pick up my remaining doors that have shut my f-ing job down and made me look like a total jacka** of a contractor, and was told only one door arrived, it will be another week or so for the two remaining, I about flipped out. I am so outraged I can’t even begin to express my hatred for how this once great company is being run. Can anyone do anything for me to allow me to finish my project. I can’t set the baseboard, I can’t set the casing, I can’t have the carpet installed, they schedule a huge party which they had to say my contractor didn’t get it done which is the the result of trusting you people to delivery on what I was told. Ordered doors 10 days, I’m now at 1.5 months and you idiots still don’t have my doors. Lastly, someone should discipline that that smart a** girl who works at your store, no one and I mean no one should come up from the back offices and start F- bombing in front of the customers. The girl thinks she is something special, well in my eyes she not, she a girl who needs to be trained on what is appropriate and what is not. Not fired, trained, apparently this office feels they are more important than there customers. I’ve talked to numerous friends who are contractors and they are saying the same thing about this once great company. Help me, and fix your simple problems with your employees. This can not stand. Now the guy today said we have a truck coming in on Wednesday and he would call me back, he didn’t and my doors better be and on that truck. I loved 84 once, but I promise I will be the biggest enemy you ever had. This is the 84 in MARS pa. Who in the hell is running this branch. Does no one care anymore. Call me 412-585-XXXX

I would like to thank Richard Ludwick at the Las Vegas location on Decatur Blvd. I am a construction purchaser for a major construction company in town, I have been using Richard for over twenty years. As our town is getting very busy, my time is more valuable then ever. He understands this and has more orders ready many times in less then 1hr. Many times in minutes. It is very much appreciated.
Thank you Richard
