Wakefield’s was founded in 1917 by James Wakefield. The company began by offering women’s clothing and accessories until James son, Martin, decided to expand the small store and add men’s and children’s shoes and clothing.
Today, the company has 10 locations in and around the greater Anniston, Alabama, area. The original Wakefield’s store remains and the remaining 9 locations are known as either Martin’s or Martin’s Family Clothing. Martin passed away in 2010.
Wakefield’s and Martin’s are still owned and operated by the Wakefield family, with the grandson of James, William, now acting as CEO. Company headquarters remain in Anniston, Alabama.

I would like to say thank you to all of you ladies that worked September 26th, 2020 for being so courteous and helpful when my transmission in my truck went out just as I was pulling into your parking lot and was stranded. With no phone to call anyone for help and being from out of state and having my little seizure service dog with me. You ladies stepped up to help me and I am so grateful for each of you!!!! If I had a chance to give you all a good raise in your pay, a great customer service plaque and a humanitarian award, I would do it with great pride and gratification and print it in every newspaper, and post it on every social media website I could just to let people know how awe each of you really are!!!! But I can not do that, so I am sending this to your corporate office and hopefully you will all get at least a little pay raise and a recognition for being great customer service reps for your store. Thank you again for all of your time and you courteous help and reassurance that everything was going to be alright!!!!
