Pharmavite was founded in 1971 by Oluwason Henry Burdick and Barry Pressman. The company makes vitamin and mineral supplements under the brand name Nature Made, as well as a soy based snack bar called SOY JOY.

The company was purchased in 1989 by Japanese based pharmaceutical company Otsuka. Pharmavite remains based in the US and had headquarters in Northridge, California. The main manufacturing plant is located in San Fernando, California. In 2013, a new plant, which makes softgels and gummy vitamins, opened in Opelika, Alabama.

Pharmavite participates in the USP Dietary Supplement Verification Program, which performs random tests for quality, purity, and potency, by conducting tests on products chosen directly off of store shelves.

USANA Health Sciences Corporate Office

USANA Health Sciences was founded in West Valley, Utah, in 1992 by Dr. Myron Wentz. The company manufactures and distributes nutritional supplements, vitamins, and other health products.

The distribution of the products is via a multi level marketing system by employees called associates. USANA the 24th largest multi level marketing company in the world and their products are sold in more than 20 countries. Products cannot be purchased in stores, only through associates or directly from the company’s website. The company is publicly traded on the NYSE under the ticker symbol: USNA.

USANA was involved in a lawsuit which claimed that the company was operating a pyramid scheme and that their products were no better than the ones that could be purchased at a local drug store. After more than a year of dispute, USANA and their accuser reached an undisclosed settlement outside court.

The company was acquired in 2002 by the private equity firm Bear Sterns for $310 million. Annual sales were $751 million in 2010. The company went public on the NYSE in 2009 and can be found under the ticker symbol: VSI.

While the company had some quality control problems in 2007, with some products containing more than the FDA allowance of lead, these issues appear to have been resolved. In 2011, the company passed a ConsumerLab.Com testing of their women’s multi-vitamin, which passed the USFDA standards.
