USG Corporation is a manufacturer of construction materials.
The company was created in 1901 when 30 gypsum and plaster companies merged to form United States Gypsum Company. Gypsum is a sulfate mineral and is the main component used in plaster.
In 1909 United States Gypsum Company (USG) acquired the Sackett Plaster Board Company, which had invented Sackett Board, the product that would eventually be called SHEETROCK.
The company experienced growth after its advertising campaign featuring the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair buildings, which had been built almost entirely out of SHEETROCK.
Today SHEETROCK is the world’s top brand of wall board, making USG one of the largest building products manufacturers in the United States. USG also manufactures other interior wall finishing products under the DUROCK and FIBEROCK brands.
USG Corporation trades publicly on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol USG, is #650 in the Fortune 1000, has 8,900 employees, and had $3.68 billion in revenue in 2013.
