In 1991, brothers David and Robert Trone opened a store named Liquor World in Claymont, Delaware. During the 1990s, Liquor World locations grew along the East Coast.
In 1998, the brothers acquired Total Beverage, rebranding those locations as Total Wine.
Total Wine is a privately owned liquor and beer selling company with some of the lowest prices anywhere.
In fact, their low prices were sometimes a problem. Connecticut has state laws that prohibit selling alcohol below state-mandated set pricing. Total Wine was fined $37,500 in 2016 for selling below the state minimum price.
As of January 2022, Total Wine had 229 stores in 27 states. It conducts online sales in 14 states that allow online alcohol sales.
In mid-March 2020, the company announced a $2-per-hour pay raise for its store employees amid the coronavirus pandemic in “recognition of the hard work [they] were doing”; in April, the company ended the pay increase because of “trends in the business and external environment”.
In January 2022, the company donated $20,380 to the Anton Art Center in Maryland.
Total Wine and More maintains a corporate office in Bethesda, Maryland.

My 19 year old had a horrible experience @Tempe Marketplace Total Wine location today.
My son was diagnosed as TID in 2020. He was in the parking lot when he has a severe drop in blood glucose level. He knew he needed to get sugar quickly. The closest store was TW. He entered and was greeted by the cashier. He grabbed a coke and proceeded to the register. It was then that hecwas asked for ID. He was told since he was not 21 years old he could not purchase the soda. My son told him he was unaware of the 21 yr old policy. He explained the medical situation he was having and ki day asked them to let him purchase the soda so he could correct his low. He was told no and that it would jeopardize their liquor license ! He ran out of the store disoriented. Thankfully a kind stranger stopped to help him.
I called and spoke to the manager Lisa. She told me that they couldn’t even sell him ice because he was not 21. I asked her if she was aware of how critical a diabetic “low” is. She stated she was aware . I am speechless that
not one employee was compassionate enough to help my son .
