Yahoo was founded in 1994 when Jerry Yang and David Filo created a website called Jerry’s Guide to the Web.
In 1995, the website was changed to the Yahoo.com domain.
In 1996, the company went public. The company continued to grow rapidly until the dot-com bubble burst in 2000.
In 2000, Yahoo began to use Google to power their search results. In 2004, the company launched its own web search product.
In 2009, Carol Bartz replaced Yang as CEO. She was fired in 2011.
In 2012, Marissa Mayer, a former Google executive, was hired as CEO.
In 2013, Yahoo acquired Snip it and Tumblr. 
Yahoo was one of the highest-read news and media websites, with more than 7 billion views per mont. This made Yahoo the sixth most visited website globally in 2016.
In September of 2016, Yahoo disclosed that there had been a data breach that occurred in late 2014, in which information associated with at least 500 million user accounts. This remains one of the largest breaches reported to date. Many users were more angry that Yahoo failed to disclose this issue for almost two years, than the actual breach itself. In October of 2017, Oath announced that the breach had been worse than originally believed and that ALL Yahoo users had been affected. 
In 2017, Verizon acquired Yahoo for $4.8 billion. Verizon already owns AOL and plans to merge the two websites into a new company called Oath. It is unknown if company headquarters will remain in Sunnyvale, California. Yahoo is now a web services provider that is wholly owned by Verizon through its subsidiary Oath, Inc.
Former CEO Marissa Mayer will step down and Verizon CEO Thomas McInerney will lead the newly formed company.
The core of Yahoo, minus the Internet website, will now be traded on the NASDAQ under the name Altaba. The new ticker symbol is AABA.
