Roblox was founded by co-founders David Baszucki and Erik Cassel in 2004, originally under the name DynaBlocks.
The company changed its name in 2005 and was officially launched in 2006.
Roblox is an online video game platform and video game creation company. Roblox was a small company for many years, until sometime in 2010. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the demand for Roblox games has increased substantially.
Throughout 2017, Roblox engaged in a number of updates to its server technology, as the technology they were operating on until that point was out of date and led to frequent outages.
In November 2020, Roblox added a sound effect when a character dies, making an “oof” sound. This popular sound effect has become a large part of the platform’s reputation. The sound effect was so popular, that Roblox began charging users if they wanted that sound effect in their games.
In March 2021, the company went public on the NYSE under the ticker symbol RBLX.
The company’s stock rose 60% on its first day of trading, adding to the wealth of founder and CEO David Baszucki by $4.6 billion.
Roblox maintains a corporate office in San Mateo, California.
