One of the ten new channels offered to QUBE subscribers was C-3, which showed Pinwheel, a show similar to Sesame Street, every day from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Nickelodeon was officially launched in 1979. Pinwheel continued to air on the new station in three to five hour blocks, and was the precursor to the Nick Jr. block.
The channel struggled at first, and after losing $10 million in 1984, it went through a rebranding. After the rebranding Nickelodeon became the dominant channel in children’s programming.
In 1990 Nickelodeon opened Nickelodeon Studios, a television studio/attraction at Universal Studios Florida.
Today Nickelodeon is a basic cable and satellite television network that is owned by MTV Networks Kids & Family Group, a unit of Viacom Media Networks, a division of Viacom.
The company also operates an indoor theme park in New Jersey called American Dream.
In December 2020, Time and Nickelodeon announced a new award program called “Kid of the Year”.
The NFL is targeting youngsters and teens by showing playoff games on Nickelodeon in 2020.
