Marie Callender’s began in the 1930’s when Marie Callender and her husband Cal, found it difficult to make ends meet. Marie began making pies and had her son, Don deliver them on his bicycle. Don Callender began selling his mother’s pies wholesale to restaurants in Orange County, California.
The first restaurant opened in 1948 and Don named it after his mother.
Today, Marie Callender’s has 74 locations, mostly in California, and a few locations in Mexico. The company offers mostly American cuisine, an extensive salad bar, and pies to be eaten at the restaurant or pies can be purchased at the front counter to go.
The company is also well-known for offering favorite meals and pies frozen in most major grocery stores.
The company filed for bankruptcy in June of 2011 and abruptly closed 31 low-performing locations. Bankruptcy proceedings finished under the control of Wayzata Investments Partners.
In February 2021, the company announced that it would need to raise prices due to the increase in wholesale prices of staples such as wheat and sugar.
