GardenBurger was founded in 1982 by Paul Wenner in Gresham, Oregon, at Wenner’s restaurant. In 1985, the company incorporated under the name Wholesome and Hearty Foods, Inc.
The company produces and distributes vegetarian and vegan style “hamburgers”. The original vegetarian burger is made up of mushrooms, rice, oats, cheese, eggs, garlic and onions. Other “burgers” include Sun Dried Tomato, Black Bean Chipotle Burgers, and Portabella Burgers. In 2005 the company filed for bankruptcy, but continued to operate by going private. In 2007, GardenBurger was purchased by the Kellogg Company.
Although GardenBurgers has plants in Irvine, California, headquarters are located in Battle Creek, Michigan, where Kellogg’s has their headquarters.
