Food Maxx was founded in 1986 by current CEO Bob Piccinini in Fresno, California. The company operates a chain of no-frills supermarkets.
In 1986, the idea of no-frills, warehouse-type supermarkets was a unique concept. Rather than spend money making stores look pretty, Piccinini believed that people would be willing to give up fancy storefronts to save serious money on groceries. Today, the company has more than 52 stores in California and Nevada, operating under the Food Maxx, Food 4 Less, MaxxValue, Lucky, and Save Mart names.
In 2007, the company acquired numerous Albertson’s stores in the San Francisco and Sacramento, California, area and changed them to Lucky or Save Mart names.
In December 2022, the company announced that it would offer a “tamale central” in select stores.
Food Maxx maintains a corporate office in Modesto, California.
