The company was founded in 1986 by Janie and Jerry Murrell in Arlington, Virginia. When they opened the restaurant, the couple had 4 sons, making it the “Five Guys.” The Murrells went on to have a 5th son later on. Today, all 5 guys (sons) work for the restaurant chain.
The company began franchising in 2003 and quickly expanded. Five guys currently have 2,500 locations throughout the U.S. and in 7 countries, including Ireland, which opened its first location in early 2016. Five Guys has received some criticism lately from magazines and websites which claim that their burgers and fries have more fat and calories than any other fast-food chain. Five Guys insists their food content is on par with other fast-food chains.

In May 2022, the company opened its first Sydney, Australia, location.
