Rubio’s Coastal Grill was founded in 1983 by Ralph Rubio when he and some friends were fishing in San Felipe, Baja, California. He loved the fish tacos served in town and wanted to open his own restuaurant with the same type of food in his hometown of San Diego, California. The original location was called Rubio’s Mexican Grill and it featured French fries, fish tacos, and calamari.

This casual dining chain now has 193 locations and has plans to open 8 more locations in Florida. The company employs 4,000 people and had annual revenue in 2013 of $200 million.

The company uses Alaskan pollock as their source of fish, which is then battered and fried, typically served in a corn tortilla. While fish taco’s are popular in California, they are still uncommon in many parts of the U.S.

The company was forced to close abuot 7% of its locations after the coronavirus and subsequent quarantine of 2020.

To celebrate its reopening after the COVID-19 crisis, the company is offering a free childs dinner each Wednesday with every adult entree purchased through the month of September.

Rubio’s Coastal Grill was purchased in 2010 by Mill Road Capital, a private investment firm.

Hello Rubio’s. I took part in the recent contest to come up with a taco phrase and hopefully be one of the winners! I entered about 25 phrases but I guess I didn’t win. Will you share the winning phrases so I can read them? Do I receive a parting gift for quantity of entries?????
    Thanks. James Preston

I was in the plaza at the corner of Sunnyvale-Soratoga rd & El Camino in Suunyvale California this morning. There is a Rubio’s near by the place I was standing. I was charging my laptop at the outdoor public siting area because I am a high school math tutor and will give a lesson over the internet this afternoon, then I saw a man standing in front of the Rubio’s door and was taking my picture with his cell phone I think. So I walk to Rubio’s want to ask him why he took my picture. When I open the Rubio’s door , before I say anything, this man standing behind the counter, yelled to me loudly : “get out of here ,you are not allow to enter the store !” I was amazing and asked him ” Why you took my picture ? and why I am not allow to be in the store ? What I am doing wrong ? ” and he just yell to me and call the plaza’s security people to come. The security people ask me to leave the plaza, so I said I did not do anything wrong, why I have to leave the plaza ? and I think maybe a police will be more nice to take care these kind situation. When the Police come, they said the man in Rubio’s don’t like you, and want you to leave , you may not come to this plaza at all later on. I asking the police “can people took picture of me here?” police said “yes ,this is a public place.” , I ask police ” Just because this man in Rubio’s don’t like me, he can ask police to ask me never come to this plaza even if I want go to other stores to buy something in this plaza ?” and the police said “yes.” I said ” What I did wrong ? I did not do nothing wrong ! I don’t think this way to handle this case is correct at all ! I will publish this in the internet where I have more than 2000 follower. And I will talk to the city hall office human right division. ”
This is what had happened this morning and because I was too upset and I canceled the tutoring lesson with my student and moved it to next week.
How could your store’s worker treat customer in that plaza this rude ? And he did wear a cross necklace, I am also a Jesus follower. Hope your office can give me a fair answer.

I worked at the Rubio’s location in San Jose, Ca for 3 weeks before I quit due to poor management & a hostile work environment and also because when the GM went to discuss an issue she had with my attendance, she chose to do so with her mother present (who also works there) instead of in private which is how it should have been done. I literally felt like I was under attack, like if I said the wrong thing, maybe she would “handle me” how she saw fit along with help from her mother. I could be wrong, but since I’ve never been in a situation like that before where the 23 yr old GM has her mother on standby while she reprimands an employee was a truly traumatizing experience. As for the negative work environment, there is one employee in particular who has had complaints from co-workers about her bad attitude yet she is still employed (which is fine but the temper & moodiness needs to change) & still has that temper no one likes to work with. I really don’t want to see anyone let go because we all need our jobs in order to survive (including me, I just didn’t need it bad enough to be treated & talked to the way I was while I was there), but I feel the entire management team (who are all between the tender ages of 22-24 yrs old) could use some additional training in proper management & protocol in how to deal with a team of employees in a professional manner. Perhaps if they put down their cell phones long enough they would actually be able to manage employees more effectively. Also, contacting an employee’s family member (who happens to work there as well) in order to reach an employee (an employee who had already informed them of the reason for their absence from work), I feel, is crossing the line. Especially when family member is unaware of what is going on with regard to said employee, which in turn caused more confusion & disruption with the entire incident. This was by far the absolute worst experience I have ever had while working for a business & hope to never find myself working under these conditions ever again.

I have been working for Rubios coastal grill (Winter Park #307) since august from when it first opened in Orlando (store #307). My GM is Andrew Wolfe and DM Chris Clayton. I am writhing to inform the company of my mistreatment. Since the company first opened I have not received a respectful pay. When I was first hired I was told I was gonna enter the kitchem as a line 3-4 once the restaurant opened I started working as a prep/line 2. Which requires more work but I was still getting paid the $9.90.. I’ve meet with both of my GM and DM and was told a raise would go into affect immediately but I am still waiting on it 2 months later after I have meet with them. I enjoy my job but I do not enjoy that my pay is lower than what was negotiated.
