Founded in 1941 in downtown Los Angeles, California, by Carl Karcher and his wife Margaret, Carl’s Jr. is now one of the largest franchised fast food restaurant chains in the U.S. Karcher and his wife borrowed $300 against their car to buy a hot dog cart. Within one year, the couple owned 4 hot dog carts and the following year they moved to Anaheim, California, to open their first drive-through restaurant, Carl’s Drive-In Barbeque. Although the company is known for hamburgers today, those were not actually added to the menu until 1945.

In January 2019, the company announced that it was going to introduce a plant-based burger called Beyond Famous Star.

Carl’s Jr. announced that it was testing a burger for one day only which features a CBD based sauce. If it proves to be popular, it might make the regular menu.

Kentucky Fried Chicken was founded in 1952 but had its roots back in the days of the Great Depression. Harland Sanders began selling fried chicken from a small roadside restaurant in North Corbin, Kentucky, in 1930. He believed that his popular recipe for fried chicken could be a successful franchise operation. The first franchise was in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1952.

Today, Kentucky Fried Chicken, often referred to as KFC or even Colonel Sanders, is the second most popular restaurant chain in America, right behind McDonald’s. The company has almost 19,000 locations in 118 countries and was one of the first American chains to expand internationally. Although the company had a few problems in the early 1970s due to changes in corporate ownership, the company is now a subsidiary of Yum Brands, which also owns Taco Bell and Pizza Hut.

KFC received some unexpected “free” advertising when Representative Steve Cohen ate a bucket of chicken after Attorney General William Barr declined to show up for a hearing to the Judiciary Committee.

The company had $23 billion in sales in 2013 and continues to expand its locations both internationally and in the U.S.

Eleven Madison Park Restaurant was founded in 1998 by Danny Meyer. In 2006, chef Daniel Humm began working for Meyer. Humm and Will Guidara purchased the restaurant from Meyer in 2011. Humm and Guidara also own the NoMad Restaurant in the NoMad Hotel. Both of these restaurants are owned by the Made Nice Group.

The restaurant offers one, multi-course taste testing menu that is inspired by New York’s culinary traditions. Eleven Madison Park offers contemporary American cuisine and has won 5th place in the S. Pelligrino List of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants in 2014. Chef Humm was also won the James Beard Award as Outstanding Chef.

Eleven Madison Park has also released a cookbook by the same name in 2011. Humm and Guidara also released a second cookbook in 2012 entitled “I Love New York: Ingredients and Recipes”.

Bonefish Grill was founded by Chris Parker and Tim Curci in January of 2000. The company has headquarters in Tampa Bay, Florida, and currently has more than 158 locations in 34 states. Bonefish Grill offers American style seafood in a casual dining experience. The company offers mainly wood grilled fish and has a wide variety of specialty- type mixed drinks. Bonefish Grill also offers a gluten-free dining experience.

The typical Bonefish Grill restaurant is only open for dinner, although some locations are open for weekend brunch. Although the company is considering offering a lunchtime menu, at this time they are using only a few locations for a pilot program.

Bonefish Grill was purchased by Bloomin’ Brands in 2001 when the company had only 3 locations. By 2006, the company had 100 locations.

The ongoing coronavirus crisis of 2020 and subsequent quarantine in most states has caused serious hardships for the restaurant industry. Parent company Bloomin’ Brands has plans to make a strong comeback and recovery.

Jean-Georges was founded by current CEO and co-founder Phil Suarez and chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten in 1997. The restaurant is located in the Trump International Hotel and Tower, on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, New York. Current chef is Mark LaPico. The restaurant offers New French cuisine.

Jean-Georges is a three Michelin star restaurant, which makes it one of the top 5 French restaurants in the U.S. Jean-Georges is also one of the few restaurants that has earned 4 stars by The New York Times. In addition to the rating by The New York Times, chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten was voted Chef of the Year in 1997 by Esquire Magazine as well as earning The James Beard Award in 2010 for Outstanding Wine Service. Jean-Georges was also ranked the 51st best restaurant in the world on “La Liste”, in December of 2015.

The restaurant offers a two course lunch and four course dinner, available via a prix-fixe menu.
