Chuck and Don’s Pet Food Corporate Office

Chuck Anderson and his wife were operating a dog training business out of a boarding kennel in Minnesota in the early 1970’s. The couple met Don Tauer, who bred German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers. Anderson and Tauer wanted to create their own business and in May of 1990, the first Chuck and Don’s Pet Food location was opened in Eagan, Minnesota.

Today, the company has 34 stores in Colorado, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. The company focuses on being a “home town” pet supply store that customers can rely on for everything from pet accessories to training, food to housing. Don Tauer retired in 2000 but still lends his name to the company. In 2014, Chuck and Don’s Pet Food launched an employee stock ownership program.

Chuck and Don’s Pet Food will open two new stores in 2016. The company had annual revenue in 2014 of $52.7 million and is listed as #4,366 on the Inc. 5000 list of Fastest Growing Companies in America.

In February 2019, the company was acquired by Independent Pet Partners for an undisclosed sum. 

In January 2021, Chuck and Don’s announced that they were offering same-day delivery service. 

In February 2023, the company announced that it was filing for bankruptcy and would close several locations.

The Pet Club was founded by Tim Stevenson in Tempe, Arizona, in 1982. The company started off with one location and has grown to more than 60 stores in 3 states; Arizona, California, and Texas.

The company focuses on premium pet products and accessories, as well as grooming at most locations. Beyond the standard fare for dogs and cats, The Pet Club also offers a wide variety of animal food for all types of pets including hamsters, rats, mice, gerbils, birds, fish, lizards, horses, goats, sheep, and ferrets.

The Pet Club offers services not found at many other pet stores, including delivery of food and other pet items, low-cost vaccination clinics, as well as adoption services from local animal shelters and animal rescue sites. Some locations also offer dog training classes.

Hollywood Feed was founded in 1951. The company originally began as a feed and grain store for large farm animals, such as cows and horses. The company was also the main supplier of Purina products for the Memphis zoo. The company changed names from Hollywood Feed to Hollywood Pet Star in the early 1980’s. New owners, Shawn McGhee and family, changed the name back to the original name when they purchased the company in 2006.

Today, Hollywood Feed has 40 stores in 5 states. The company expects to open another 10 locations in 2016 and hopes to continue opening new stores at this rate each year. Hollywood feed stopped selling live animals in 2007, changing their focus to pet accessories and high quality, natural pet foods.

The company is also dedicated to selling items made in the U.S.A. One of their largest selling, non-food items, are Mississippi Pet Beds, which are made in Tupelo, Mississippi.

Mud Bay employs almost 300 persons, who also own private stock in the company.  The 5 lead executives are children and family of founder Elsa Wulff.

In addition to the usual cat and dog food, the company offers holistic approaches to common cat and dog problems that many pet owners face. The company states that they research every product they sell and that they always look for natural foods and other pet accessories whenever possible.
