Tire Discounters was founded in 1976 by current chairman William (Chip) Wood in Cincinnati, Ohio. The company has remained family owned and Chip’s son Jamie Wood currently serves as VP of Sales & Operations.

The company began with a single location but expanded quickly in the southern Ohio region.

History

The company was the first to offer all-inclusive pricing instead of the traditional way of separating tire and installation charges. The company also offers free 4 wheel alignment with the purchase of 4 tires.

In addition to tires, the company also offers other services like brakes, shocks & struts and oil changes.

Tire Discounters is currently the 10th largest independent tire dealer in the US. There are over 100 Tire Discounter locations in Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky.

In 2017, the company announced that it had plans to double its footprint in the tire industry, growing from 106 locations to 200 or more within the next 5 years.

In January 2023, Tire Discounters acquired Skip Cottrell’s Tire in Kentucky.

ADT was founded in 1874 as American District Telegraph when 57 separate telegraph companies merged together. As the telephone became the standard form of communication in the late 19th century, ADT looked for new products and services. Among those were the Western Union company. In 1909, the company began to expand into fire and burglar alarm systems.

History

In the 1960s, ADT went public. In 1964, the company was found to be a monopoly. The company was forced to adopt a nationwide price list which they could not vary from.

In 1977, ADT was acquired by Lord Ashcroft’s Hawley Goodall company. Hawley was rebranded as ADT.

In the early 1990s, ADT surpasses 1 million customers.

In 1997, the company was acquired by Tyco.

In 2010, ADT acquired competitor Broadview Security.

In 2011, Tyco split into 3 separate companies, with ADT being one of the three.

In 2012, ADT debuted on the NYSE as an independent company.

In 2016, the company was acquired by Apollo Global Management for $7 billion and merged it with another security company, Protection One.

The company uses an authorized dealer program. Under this program, independent dealers offer security system installations, which are then monitored by ADT. Some ADT Authorized Dealers use similar DSC, Honeywell/Ademco products as installed by ADT, while other dealers utilize GE or ITI products. Regardless of whether a customer purchases ADT monitoring services directly from ADT or through an authorized dealer, a monitoring contract is required.

Today, ADT is the largest security system provider in the US and Canada with nearly 6.5 million subscribers.

ConAgra was founded in 1919 by Frank Little and Alva Kinney as Nebraska Consolidated Mills (NCM). The company began in Grand Island, Nebraska but moved to Omaha in 1922.

In 1951, the company established their Duncan Hines brand cake mix. In 1956, Duncan Hines was sold to Proctor & Gamble.

In 1971, the business name was changed to ConAgra. The company nearly went bankrupt in the early 1970s.

In 1980, the company acquired Banquet Foods. The company expanded quickly into the frozen foods business by purchasing RJR Nabisco and Beatrice Foods.

In 2013, Ralcorp was acquired.

Today, ConAgra is one of the largest packaged food companies in the US. They own 100s of brands including Chef Boyardee, La Choy, Hunts, Rotel, Healthy Choice, Slim Jim, Swiss Miss, Marie Callendar’s, Bertolli and many more.

Zillow was founded in 2005 by Rich Barton and Lloyd Frink. The two were former Microsoft executives and co-founders of Expedia. The website is an online real estate database where buyers and sellers can research properties and their values by using the company’s Zestimate.

History

In 2008, Zillow Mortgage Marketplace and Zillow Advice were launched. The marketplace allows home buyers to get loan quotes without entering personal information like social security numbers. The Advice portion of the site allows people to ask real estate questions and get answers from local experts in their market.

In 2009, the company partnered with over 180 US newspapers to offer real estate search engines to their websites. Zillow Mobile was also launched this year.

Zillow went public on the NASDAQ in 2011. They also acquired Postlets and partnered with Yahoo Real Estate.

In 2015, Zillow acquired Trulia for $2.5 billion.

Today, Zillow and Trulia are the leading real estate websites in the world.

In July 2023, Zillow stock soared on an upgrade.

Zillow maintains a corporate office in Seattle, Washington.

Carnival Cruise Lines was founded by Ted Arison in 1972 with the purchase of the Empress of Canada ship. The same year, the company’s maiden voyage on the TSS Mardi Gras, runs aground near Miami.

In 1975, the company purchases the Empress of Britain, which it renames to TSS Carnivale.

In 1982, the Tropicale is unveiled and a shipbuilding boom begins in the cruise industry.

In 1984, Carnival is the first cruise line to advertise on television. Carnival becomes the most popular cruise line in the world during the late 1980s.

In 1990, Carnival begins production on their Fantasy class ships. In 1999, Carnival unveils their Triumph class ships.

In 2001, the Spirit class is introduced.

In recent years, Carnival has been plagued by stranded ships including a fire on Carnival Splendor in 2010. A fire on Carnival Triumph, a generator failure on Carnival Dream and mechanical problems on Carnival Legend have all occurred in the first 3 months of 2013.

Today, Carnival operates 24 cruise ships.
