IBM can trace its roots back to 1911 when Charles Ranlett Flint merged 3 separate technology companies to form the Computing Tabulating Recording Company (CTR).

In 1924, the company was renamed to International Business Machines Corporation or IBM for short.

In 1952, Thomas J. Watson, Jr. succeeded his father as CEO of IBM.

History

In 1956, a computer was programmed to play checkers and learn from previous games.  This is the first example of artificial intelligence.

In 1963, IBM headquarters was moved from NYC to Armonk, NY where it remains today.

In 1974, IBM engineer George Laurer developed the Universal Product Code or UPC system.

In 2005, IBM sold its personal computer business to Lenovo.

Today, IBM is one of the largest technology and consulting companies worldwide.  The company has received the most accepted patents annually for the past 20 years.

Monster Corporate Office

Monster.com began in 1994 when Jeff Taylor created a searchable jobs database called The Monster Board.  The database was initially filled with jobs from newspaper ads.

Adion (Taylor’s holding company) was acquired by TMP.  TMP goes public in 1996.

In 1999, after merging with Online Career Center, the company becomes Monster.com.  The company advertises in a Super Bowl commercial.

History

In 2000, the company acquires JOBTRAK.  Monstermoving.com is launched the same year.

In 2002, the company purchases the domain Jobs.com.

In 2005, CEO Jeff Taylor leaves Monster to start Eons.com.

In 2007, Monster launches mobile job search.

In 2008, Trovix is acquired.

In 2010, Monster acquires HotJobs from Yahoo

Today, Monster is the largest job search engine in the world.

LinkedIn Corporate Office

LinkedIn was founded in 2002 by Reid Hoffman and other founding members of Paypal.  The website was launched in 2003.

In 2006, the site becomes profitable for the first time.

History

In 2007, Reid steps down as CEO.  He is replaced by Dan Nye.

In 2008, an office is opened in London.  French and Spanish versions of the site are launched.

In 2009, Jeff Weiner replaces Dan Nye as CEO.

By 2010, the site has over 90 million members.

In 2011, the company goes public.

Today, LinkedIn has over 225 million members.  The site is currently available in 17 languages.

In January 2022, the company stated that the most sought after jobs are in the health care and human resources sectors. 

With most companies experiencing staffing shortages in 2021 and early 2022, Linkedin says employees want flexible schedules and remote options. 

Linkedin maintains a corporate office in Sunnyvale, California.

Pandora Internet Radio began in 2000 as Savage Beast Technologies.  The company was founded by Will Glaser, Jon Kraft, and Tim Westergren.  The company created software which categorized music into recognizable patterns called the Music Genome Project.

The company received funding in 2004 to create a consumer facing software instead of trying to license the technology to larger companies.

In 2005, Pandora Radio launched.  There are both free and paid versions of the service available.  The paid version has no advertisements.

History

In 2008, a mobile version of Pandora was launched for iPhone, Android and other mobile devices.

In 2011, the company went public with an IPO.

In 2012, Pandora surpasses 150 million users.

In 2013, CEO Joe Kennedy announced he would be stepping down from the company.

Yahoo was founded in 1994 when Jerry Yang and David Filo created a website called Jerry’s Guide to the Web.

In 1995, the website was changed to the Yahoo.com domain.

History

In 1996, the company went public.  The company continued to grow rapidly until the dot-com bubble burst in 2000.

In 2000, Yahoo began to use Google to power their search results.  In 2004, the company launched its own web search product.

In 2009, Carol Bartz replaced Yang as CEO.  She was fired in 2011.

In 2012, Marissa Mayer, a former Google executive, was hired as CEO.

In 2013, Yahoo acquired Snip it and Tumblr.  yahoo 1

Yahoo was one of the highest-read news and media websites, with more than 7 billion views per mont. This made Yahoo the sixth most visited website globally in 2016.

In September of 2016, Yahoo disclosed that there had been a data breach that occurred in late 2014, in which information associated with at least 500 million user accounts. This remains one of the largest breaches reported to date. Many users were more angry that Yahoo failed to disclose this issue for almost two years, than the actual breach itself. In October of 2017, Oath announced that the breach had been worse than originally believed and that ALL Yahoo users had been affected. yahoo 3

In 2017, Verizon acquired Yahoo for $4.8 billion. Verizon already owns AOL and plans to merge the two websites into a new company called Oath. It is unknown if company headquarters will remain in Sunnyvale, California. Yahoo is now a web services provider that is wholly owned by Verizon through its subsidiary Oath, Inc.

Former CEO Marissa Mayer will step down and Verizon CEO Thomas McInerney will lead the newly formed company.

The core of Yahoo, minus the Internet website, will now be traded on the NASDAQ under the name Altaba. The new ticker symbol is AABA.
