The Metropolitan Life Insurance Company or MetLife for short began in 1863 as the National Union Life and Limb Insurance Company.

In 1868, the company name was changed to Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and the company began to focus on life insurance.

By 1909, MetLife was the largest life insurer in the US.

History

By 1930, the company insured 20% of the US and Canadian populations.

In 1998, the company changed from a customer owned corporation to a publicly owned one.  This was followed by an IPO in 2000.

In 2005, the company acquired Travelers Life & Annuity.

In 2010, the company purchased American Life Insurance Company (Alico) from AIG.

Today, MetLife is one of the largest providers of insurance, annuities and employee benefit programs in the world.  The company currently serves 90 million customers in 60 countries.

Cardinal Health was founded by Robert Walter in 1971 as Cardinal Foods.  The company was originally a food wholesaler.

In 1979, the company acquired Bailey Drug Company and began to wholesale prescription drugs.

In 1983, the company went public.

In 1999, Allegiance Healthcare was acquired.

In 2006, the company acquired ParMed Pharmaceuticals.

In 2008, the company agreed to pay $34 million after being sued for inappropriately dispensing Hydrocodone.

In 2010, Kinray was acquired.

In 2012, the company’s Lakeland, FL distribution center was shut down for a second time after inappropriately dispensing Oxycodone.

Today, Cardinal Health is one of the largest distributors of pharmaceuticals and other medical products in the US.  They currently service more than 60,000 pharmacies nationwide.

The Federal National Mortgage Association, known as Fannie Mae, was created in 1938 as part of FDR’s New Deal.

In 1954, an amendment was passed that allowed Fannie Mae stock to be purchased by private investors.

In 1968, the company was completely privatized in order to remove its debt from the federal budget.

History

In 1981, the company issued its first Mortgage Backed Security or MBS.

In 1999, the company began to offer mortgages to low and moderate income families due to political pressure from President Clinton.

In 2003, the subprime mortgage crisis began and the company was thrown into turmoil.

In 2008, the company was placed under control of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA).

In 2010, the company was removed from the NYSE.

Today, Fannie Mae is the largest player in the US secondary mortgage market.

Berkshire Hathaway was founded in 1839 by Oliver Chance as the Valley Falls Company.

In 1929, the company merged with Berkshire Cotton to form Berkshire Fine Spinning Associates.

In 1955, the company merged with Hathaway Manufacturing to form Berkshire Hathaway.

History

In 1962, Warren Buffett began buying stock in Berkshire Hathaway.  By 1964, he owned the majority of the company, which was failing.

In 1967, Buffett expanded the business into the insurance industry with the purchase of the National Indemnity Company.

In the late 1970s, the company acquired a large position in Government Employees Insurance Company (GEICO).

In 1985, Berkshire Hathaway ceased all textile manufacturing and became a holding company.

Today, Berkshire Hathaway owns many popular companies such as GEICO, Dairy Queen, NetJets and Fruit of the Loom.  The company also owns substantial portions of Heinz, American Express, Coca-Cola and IBM.

Chevron was formed in 1911 as a result of the government break-up of Standard Oil.  The company was originally called Standard Oil Company of California or SoCal for short.  In the 1930s, the name Chevron was adopted.

In 1948, the company discovered the world’s largest oil field in Saudi Arabia.

In 1984, the company merged with Gulf Oil.  This was the largest merger in history at the time.  The company name was changed to the Chevron Corporation.
