Dairy Queen

Dairy Queen has its roots in the 1938 development of soft-serve ice cream by John Fremont McCullough and his son Bradley. They convinced a friend and customer of theirs, Sheb Noble, to serve this new soft-serve in his ice cream store and he sold 1,600 dishes of it within two hours.

The McCulloughs and Noble went on to open the first Dairy Queen in 1940 in Joilet, Illinois.

The company was an early pioneer of the franchise system and used it to open 10 stores by 1941, 100 by 1947, 1,446 by 1950, and 2,600 in 1955.

History

Dairy Queen became International Dairy Queen Inc. in 1962, known as IDQ.

IDQ bought the Orange Julius chain in 1987.

IDQ was bought by Berkshire Hathaway in 1998.

Today, IDQ is a wholly owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, a company owned by Warren Buffet.

Today Dairy Queen has 5,700 stores in 19 countries.

WinCo Foods Corporate Office

WinCo Foods

WinCo Foods is a supermarket chain that was founded in Boise, Idaho by Ralph Ward and Bud Williams. The company was originally named Waremart.

In 1995 the company allowed its employees to purchase company stock through an employee stock ownership plan. Waremart employees have thus had a controlling interest in the company.

By 1991, Waremart was operating 16 stores throughout Idaho, California, and Oregon and had an annual revenue of $300 million.

History

In 1999 Waremart changed its name to WinCo, which stands for WINning COmpany.

In 2009 the company expanded to Washington, in 2009 to Utah, and in 2011 to Nevada and Arizona.

Today Winco has 89 stores, 14,200 employees and had $4.73 billion in revenue in 2011.

Olan Mills was founded by Olan Mills Sr and Mary Mills in 1932 in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The company did portrait photography and created church directories through its two divisions, Olan Mills Portrait Studios and Olan Mills Church Directories

Church Directories was its top revenue generator, with 60% of the national market, serving 11,000 churches and publishing over 3 million church directories each year.

History

Portrait Studios operated through Kmart, Target, JC Penny, Macy’s, Belk and other major retailers throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

Olan Mills was owned and operated by Olan Mills Sr, then Olan Mills II until 2011 when they were bought out by Lifetouch.

In 2012 Lifetouch announced the closing of two of the three Olan Mills facilities in Chattanooga, Tennesee, which meant the loss of almost 400 jobs.

Straight Talk has a variety of plans available from $30 to $45 a month.

History

The company offers discounts for purchasing multiple months of the same plan.

TracFone Wireless, Inc. is the largest no-contract prepaid wireless service provider in the United States with more than 12 million customers.

TracFone is a subsidiary of America Movil, Mexico’s largest telecommunications company.

In September 2020, Verizon announced that it would acquire TracFone, which would include Stright Talk, for $6.25 billion. 

The company has agreements with many wireless carriers to provide service, including Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T.
