Robert L. Johnson launched his own cable television network with a $500,000 investment in 1980. He named his network Black Entertainment Television.

It originally ran in two-hour blocks on Nickelodeon, running music videos and black sitcoms.

In 1983 BET became a full-fledged channel.

History

In 1991 the network became the first black-controlled company to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

Today BET is the most prominent television network targeting African-American audiences and reaches 90 million households.

The network features rap, hip-hop, and R&B music videos, as well as original and acquired television series and home-video-released movies.

BET also runs www.bet.com, which offers news, health, music, and careers to an audience of 3 million.

BET is owned by BET Networks, a division of Viacom.

Trust Company of Georgia was founded in 1891 under the name Commercial Travelers Savings Bank. It is the most direct ancestor of SunTrust Banks.

SunTrust Banks in its present form is the result of the merger between Trust Company of Georgia and SunBanks, Inc. in 1985.

History

The new company continued to operate under two different names until 1995 when all banks began operating under the SunTrust name.

In 2015, the company removed a severance clause which required laid off or terminated employees to continue to give their assistance for up to 2 years with no pay.

Today SunTrust operates 1,500 bank branches and 2,243 ATMs across the southern United States.

In May 2019, BB&T Bank has agreed to purchase SunTrust Bank for an estimated $28 billion in stock.

The company paid nearly $1 billion in fines after a US federal probe found irregularities in mortgage orientation, servicing, and foreclosure abuses in 2014.

SunTrust trades publicly on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol STI, is a member of the S&P 500, is #239 in the Fortune 500, has 22,899 employees, and had $9 billion in revenue in 2018.

The first Jiffy Lube was established by Edwin H. Washburn in 1971 in Ogden, Utah.

Washburn franchised 6 locations between 1971 and 1979.

History

In 1979 W. James Hindman bought out the 7 locations, established Jiffy Lube International, and moved the company’s headquarters to Baltimore, Maryland.

Jiffy Lube went public in 1987 and had over 1,000 locations by 1989.

In 1998 Pennzoil and Quaker State merged and the 581 Q Lube locations were merged into Jiffy Lube.

Pennzoil-Quaker State was acquired by Shell Oil in 2002.

Today, Jiffy Lube is a chain that offers oil changes and other automotive services through over 2,000 locations in North America.

The company has had several problems with Jiffy Lube franchises, especially in the Los Angeles area, charging for work that was not done or for doing work that was against manufacturer recommendations.

In 2022, the company announced that it would help car owners fight back against catalytic converter thieves by engraving the part(s) with the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) on the converter, discouraging theft.

Craig Newmark moved to San Francisco in 1995. He decided to start an email distribution to friends about events in the area.

There was no moderation to the list and Newmark noticed quickly that people were using it to get technical positions filled and other non-event postings.

History

Community members began asking for a web interface and Newmark registered www.craigslist.org. The website went live in 1996. The website is a classified advertisement website with sections for jobs, housing, personals, for sale, items wanted, services, community, gigs, resumes, and discussion forums.

In 1999 Craigslist incorporated as a for-profit company and Newmark quit his job as a software engineer to run Craigslist full time.

Craigslist was and continues to be, focused on community and giving people a voice. The site has had only minor changes in design since 1996 and continues to be simple. The site has no advertisements and no banner ads.

Craigslist’s main source of revenue is paid jobs in select cities (from $25 to $75) and paid broker apartment listings in New York City ($25).

Miranda and Elyette Barbour, dubbed “The Craigslist Killers,” were sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Troy LaFerrara, whom they lured with an ad on CraigsList offering female companionship.

The company is very secretive about financial details and ownership. It is believed that founder Craig Newmark owns the controlling share, current CEO Jim Buckmaster is a part owner, and 25% is owned by eBay.

In March 2018, the company removed its section titled “Personals” after Congress passed a sex trafficking law which would have left Craigslist responsible if criminals used their site for trafficking sex workers.

Today Craigslist operates websites in 700 cities in 70 countries. The company is estimated to have a net worth of $2 billion and had an approximate revenue of $694 million in 2016.
