Iron Mountain Incorporated is a data processing, records management, and data backup, destruction, and recovery services company headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts.

Herman Knaust made his fortune growing and marketing mushrooms. In 1936 he purchased a depleted iron ore mine and 100 acres of land in Livingston, New York, in order to have more space to grow the mushrooms. He named this piece of land “Iron Mountain.”

In 1951 Knaust saw a business opportunity: to protect corporate information from nuclear attack and other disasters during the Cold War. The company’s first customer was the East River Savings Bank, which made microfilm copies of deposit records and duplicate signature cards and brought them in armored cars for storage in the mountain facility.

History

In 1978 the company opened its first above-ground storage facility.

From 1980 to 2007 Iron Mountain grew through acquisitions, with revenue increasing from $3 million in 1981 to $2.7 billion in 2007.

Today Iron Mountain has 155,000 corporate clients in North America, Europe, Latin America, and Asia.

Iron Mountain trades publicly on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol IRM, is a member of the S&P 500, is #712 in the Fortune 1000, has 19,500 employees, and had $3.03 billion in revenue in 2013.

Jo-Ann Stores was founded in 1943 by Hilda and Berthold Reich and their friends Sigmund and Mathilda Rohrbach.

At first their store sold only cheese. This was successful and fabric was added soon after.

The partners began to open more locations. Eventually the cheese was dropped and the stores concentrated on fabrics  under the name Cleveland Fabric Shop.

In the 1960’s the name of the chain was changed to Jo-Ann Fabrics.

Today Jo-Ann Stores, Inc. is a retailer of crafts and fabrics that operates retail chains Jo-Ann Fabrics and Jo-Ann Etc.

Jo-Ann Stores is the #1 fabric retailer in the United States with more than 800 stores in 49 states. The company also operates the e-commerce site, Joann.com.

Jo-Ann Stores is owned by private equity firm Leonard Green & Partners.

Lennar Corporation is the United States’ second largest homebuilder.

The company was founded in 1954 under the name F&R Builders by Gene Fisher and Arnold Rosen.

History

In 1971 the company went public under its new name, Lennar, trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol LEN.

In 2006 Lennar’s was at its height of success as a Fortune 200 company and one of Forbes’ America’s Best-Managed Companies.

The housing slump of 2007-2008 hit the company hard, and it posted heavy losses of more than $2.4 billion by the end of 2008.

In October 2020, Lennar stock was soaring with new home buyers seeking newly constructed homes, rather than purchasing previously owned homes. 

The company doubled its annual dividend to $1.00 a share in the fourth quarter of 2020. 

Today Lennar builds single family and detached homes in 20 states under the names Lennar, Camelot, NuHome, and Greystone. The company has 9,111 employees and had revenue of $12.646 billion in 2017.

Charlotte Russe is a chain of clothing stores in the United States that is targeted to young women in their teens through twenties.

Daniel Lawrence and his two brothers formed the Lawrence Merchandising Corp. and opened a clothing store in 1975 in Carlsbad, California. They named the store Charlotte Russe after a favorite childhood desert.

The brothers quickly opened several more locations in San Diego.

History

In 1996 the company was acquired  by the investment firm Saunders Karp & Megrue. The new owners implemented an ambitious growth strategy, making Charlotte Russe into a national chain of shopping mall stores and taking the company public in 1999.

The company was taken private by Advent International in 2009.

Today Charlotte Russe offers value-priced trendy apparel, shoes, and accessories in 500 stores in 45 states and Puerto Rico.

Hardee’s Corporate Office

Wilbur Hardee opened his first restaurant in Greenville, North Carolina in 1960.

More restaurants were opened quickly through franchising and, on a smaller scale, acquiring other restaurant chains.

History

Hardee’s Restaurant served distinctive burger items, including the Huskee, a hamburger for 15 cents, a cheeseburger for 20 cents, fries, and milkshakes.

In the 1970’s Hardee’s expanded to Germany and Austria.

In the 1980’s the company had over 4,000 locations in the United States.

In the late 1980’s Hardee’s was bought by Imasco and the new management made decisions that had negative affects.

Ten years later, Hardee’s was down to less than 2,000 locations.

In 1997 the chain was bought by CKE Restaurants, the parent company of Carl’s Jr.

Today Hardee’s has 5,812 locations in 30 states, mostly in the Midwest and Southeast.  About 475 of the restaurants are operated by the company, while the rest are franchised.

In early October 2020, the company introduced prime rib menu items in an attempt to gain customers. 

In February 2023, the company introduced the Philly Cheesesteak to its menu.

The parent company maintains a corporate office in Franklin, Tennessee.
