In 1891 the company diversified into accident insurance and in 1899 to health insurance.

In 1960 Aetna expanded internationally when it opened an office in Toronto, Canada.

In 1968 the company went public, trading publicly on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol AET.

Today Aetna, Inc. operates in three segments: Health Care, Group Insurance, and Large Case Pensions.

The company’s customers include employer groups, individuals, part and full-time workers, health care providers, government-sponsored plans, labor groups, governmental units, and expatriates.

Aetna is a member of the S&P 500, is #84 on the Fortune 500, has almost 50,000 employees, and had $60.6 billion in revenue in 2020.

In September 2021, Aetna sued NYC and a rival health insurers group over a $34 billion Medicare contract it says was awarded to unqualified bidders.

Also in September 2021, Aetna was hit with a class action lawsuit alleging that the company had discrimanatory practices for those seeking mental health services.

Fossil Inc. is a designer and manufacturer of clothing and accessories including the brands Fossil, Relic, Abacus, Michele Watch, Skagen, and Zodiac watches.

Fossil was founded as Overseas Products International by Tom Kartsotis in 1984. Kartsotis’ brother Kosta Kartsosis, had told him about the large profits possible from importing retail goods made in the Far East.

The company’s first product was fashion watches.

History

In 1990 Kartsotis introduced leather watches under the Fossil brand.

In 2001 Fossil acquired the Swiss watch brand Zodiac from Genender International for $4.7 million.

Today Fossil has manufacturing centers in China and Switzerland and distribution centers in Germany, the United States, and Asia.

Fossil also makes watches for brands such as Adidas, Emporio Armani, Karl Lagerfield, Michael Kors, Marc Jacobs, Burberry, DKNY, Diesel, and Armani Exchange and private-label watches for Target and Wal-Mart.

Fossil sells its watches through 470 company-owned stores as well as department stores, mass merchandisers, and specialty shops in 130 countries.

Fossil trades publicly on the NASDAQ, is a member of the S&P 500, is #735 in the Fortune 1000, has 14,600 employees, and had $3.26 billion in revenue in 2013.

GoDaddy is an internet domain registrar and web hosting company.

GoDaddy was founded as Jomax Technologies in 1997 by Bob Parsons.

History

Prior to starting the company Parsons had founded and sold his financial services company Parson’s Technology Inc. for several million dollars to Intuit.

In 1999 a group of employees at Jomax decided to change the name of the company. They decided on GoDaddy because it made people smile and remember it.

Today GoDaddy provides both businesses and individuals with internet services such as domain registration and website hosting, along with software and services for website creation, e-commerce, and podcasting.

The company has 53 million domain names under management.

As of 2018, the company was the largest domain host by market share, with 62 million registered domain names. 

On April 1, 2015, GoDaddy had a successful IPO on the New York Stock Exchange, with the stock soaring 30% on the first day of trading. The ticker symbol is GDDY. 

Founder Bob Parsons continues to be the majority stakeholder.

GoDaddy maintains a corporate office in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Harry & David

Harry & David is a premium food and gift producer and retailer.

Harry & David was founded in 1910 when Samuel Rosenberg purchased Comic Pear Orchards in Oregon, naming it Bear Creek Orchards.

History

In 1914 Rosenberg’s sons Harry and David took over the orchard after completing their agricultural degrees at Cornell.

The brothers sold the pears in Europe until the Great Depression made it too difficult; they then began to sell their pears in the United States.

In 1934 the company began to sell pears by mail-order and in 1937 introduced the “Fruit of the Month Club.”

In 1946 the company incorporated under the name Harry & David.

In 1972 David’s son David H. Holmes was president of Harry & David. He created Bear Creek Holding Company as the parent company to Harry & David. Bear Creek went public and remained public until its purchase by Nabisco in 1984.

During the 1990’s Harry & David expanded its retail operations, opening more than 119 stores.

In March 2021, USA Today listed Harry & David as one of the best online stores to purchase quality food and gift items. 

Today Harry & David sells gift baskets filled with gourmet foods, most notably its Royal Riviera Pears, Moose Munch popcorn snacks, and Tower of Treats gifts. The company also sells fruits, flowers, gourmet specialties, and wine through 50 stores in 25 states.

Cablevision has its roots in the 1960’s launching of Sterling Manhattan Cable by Home Box Office (HBO) by Charles Dolan.

Dolan subsequently sold HBO and Sterling Manhattan Cable to Time Life Inc. and used the money from the sale to start a new cable system called Cablevision in Long Island, New York.

Cablevision quickly expanded to other parts of the New York metropolitan area.

By the mid-1990’s Cablevision had 2.9 million subscribers in 19 states.

Today Cablevision Systems Corporation owns and operates cable television systems through three operating segments: Cable, Lightpath, and Other.
