Alliant Energy is made up of two principal subsidiaries: Interstate Power and Light Company (IPL) and Wisconsin Power and Light Company (WPL).

IPL was created in 1925 by the merger of many small utility companies in Iowa and Minnesota. In the decade following the merger the company expanded into Wisconsin, North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Manitoba, Canada.

Today the company is named Alliant Energy and provides electricity to about 1 million customers and natural gas to 415,000 across four states. The company produces electricity at 34 power plants with a total generating capacity of 4,900 MW.

The Timken Company is a manufacturer of bearings, which are machine elements that constrain motion and reduce friction between moving parts.

The company was founded by Henry Timken in 1899 in St. Louis as The Timken Roller Bearing Axle Company. In 1898 Henry Timken was granted a patent for tapered roller bearing, which were revolutionary at the time because they reduced friction and therefore did not fail as frequently as the previously used “friction bearings.”

In addition to bearings, The Timken Company produces power transmission components, lubricants, seals, and motion control systems.

History

Customers include makers of race cars, heavy-duty trucks, light-duty trucks, heavy-duty industrial vehicles, railways and locomotives, and the military.

VWR International was founded by George Van Waters and Nat Rogers as a chemical company in the 1920’s.

In 1995 Merck, a German pharmaceutical company, purchased VWR and merged it with Merck Eurolab, thereby creating a global laboratory distributor. In 2007 the company was sold to the private equity company Madison Dearborn Partners.

Today VWR International is a global distributor of scientific and technology laboratory supplies, including instruments, glassware, chemicals, protective clothing, and production replies. The company has operations in 35 countries.

In October of 2014 VWR went public with a $536 million Initial Public Offering.

NV Energy was created through the merger of Northern Nevada’s Sierra Pacific Power and Las Vegas’ Nevada Power in 1989.

Sierra Pacific Power had its roots in the gold rush of 1850’s. Nevada Power was formed in 1906 as the Consolidated Power and Telephone Company of Nevada.

The merger of the two companies created a utility company with a survey territory of 44,000 square miles – almost all of Nevada’s populated area.

History

Today NV Energy has 1.3 million electricity customers and 155,000 natural gas customers. The company has a generating capacity of 24,000 MW, which is sold to wholesale customers in the Western United States.

In 2013 Berkshire Hathaway Energy, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, acquired NV Energy and took it private.
