In the early years, Waters was a research boutique that built one-of-a-kind instruments for various purposes. Early products included a balloon hydrometer, a nerve gas detector, process control refractometers, and a boiler feedwater flame photometer.

Today Waters Corporation manufactures high-performance liquid chromatography instruments used to separate and identify chemicals by scientists, engineers, and researchers. These products are used in food testing, drug development, and water and air quality testing.
